In competitive bidding, Screen Gems has acquired the motion picture rights to Just Dance, the wildly popular Ubisoft video game. Screen Gems will develop a film based on a franchise that is the best selling music video game of all time, with 120 million players worldwide in all age ranges. Multiple studios competed for the rights deal.

Ubisoft Film and Television and Olive Bridge Entertainment will develop and produce the project. Jason Altman and Margaret Boykin will produce for Ubisoft Film and Television alongside Jodi Hildebrand and Will Gluck for Olive Bridge Entertainment. They’ve got a script, but I’ve heard that Gluck might direct it. His directing efforts include Easy A, Friends With Benefits, Annie, and most recently Peter Rabbit.

The deal fits the mandate that Sony chief Kazuo Hirai underscored at CES, that the studio’s emphasis will be to make properties that can be exploited on multiple platforms. Just Dance is incredibly popular on Sony’s PlayStation platform — though it isn’t exclusive to PlayStation — and the game, and potentially the film, features many of Sony Music’s top artists.

First released in 2009, the Just Dance video game is celebrating its 10-year anniversary and continues to keep players moving with hit artists including Sony-based talent Shakira, Pharrell Williams, Alicia Keys, Camila Cabello, The Chainsmokers, Jennifer Lopez, P!nk, and Calvin Harris.

List of screen gem movies, they have maybe put out 3 or 4 good movies since the 90s. I don't why if Sony really does want to make video game movie why they don't use their own ips, outside that awful sounding Uncharted movie, they really don't do anything with them.

This is just going to be a generic dance movie rom-dram. They're using the Just Dance name for the same reason there's a half dozen Step Up movies with no overlapping characters.

Sony's not that smart, but I think we more than established that with Emoji Movie, Sausage Party, the Ghostbusters remake and all those Adam Sandler films.

Emoji, Sausage Party and a lot of those Sandler movies made money. That's the only thing they care about.
