Alright, so, anybody here likes Kamen Rider by any chance?

Kamen Rider is an old super hero show that began in 1971, with a companion manga released earlier. Created by Shotaro Ishinomori, the man behind Skullman, Kikaider and Cyborg 009, Kamen Rider was originally self-localized as Masked Rider until 2010. The original series was about Chemestry student Takeshi Hongo kidnapped by the nebulous organization SHOCKER who turn him into one of their cyborg super soldiers. He escapes and rebels against Shocker

Kamen Rider Build, the next season got a 30 seconds teaser of the opening. I really like it but it doesn't sound anything like it's usual J-Pop flair, but rather like something that would fit american radio "party time" playlists if the whole song was in english. You know what I mean?

Apparently, Build is a "back to basics" with the protagonist kidnapped and modified against his will like the "Showa era" Kamen Riders. I really look forward it, especially after Ex-Aid (the current season, now reaching it's finale) revived my interest on the series.

I'm the only person in the Tokusatsu fanbase that likes Saban's Masked Rider. *sigh*

Nah, I have a very soft spot for Masked Rider too. When I was a kid, I saw both Black RX and Masked Rider. The problem with Black RX was that it was subbed in portuguese so I couldn't understand jack, but the battles were so damn cool I saw in spite of it. Then I saw Masked Rider because I could actually understand what was going on. That reminds me, I should watch Dragon Knight. For the little bit I saw of it, it seemed like a story-remake of RX with Ryuki sprinkled in.

I tried to watch Ex-Aid but dropped it a few episodes in. Maybe I'd go back for Build but honestly I can't trust the KR fanbase when they say things are good or bad these days.

Ex-Aid gets REALLY good though, particularily at episode 13, aka "Christmas, but also despair". It becomes a crazy, crazy ride that makes me sad it's about to end, and makes up tenfold after the dissaster that was Ghost.

In particular mention, the "webisodes" (that are part of the canon of the TV show) such as Episode Zero, Kamen Rider Brave (set sometime after episode 13 I believe) and the "Kamen Sentai GoRider" 4-webisodes set after episode 23 , because they didn't had to abide by TV Asahi's incredibly rough regulations they were free to go oldschool directions with the show during those bits.

I know Ex-Aid has a rough start, but it grows into you (I miss Level 1 forms and "I'm a Kamen Rider" one-liner, they drop those quick) but it becomes crazy awesome.

Kamen Rider - People dressed as bugs riding motorcycles
Wait what
When did they start riding motorcycles or dressing like bugs again. I thought they hadn't done that for fifteen years.

Saban Masked Rider is mostly awful, but Shadowmoon blowing up school makes my inner ten year old very happy. And that bug sex dance that Dex does in front of his class was funny.

Well, Ex-Aid being an... unique Rider, as a videogame character (Mighty), might not be very bug-like (although some call his eyes "moth eyes"), but bikes kept appearing. Ghost rode a bike with a "horse-skull"-like front, Build's bike was shown right away too in the teaser, Wizard got around in his bike all the time as well. Drive, his main gimmick was his CAR, kind of like RX, but I guess that means he should be called Kamen Driver?

The problem is Japan's driving laws, they don't even let them do many bike stunts or speeding without taxing the ever-living hell out of them. That's why Drive's summer movie had a GP Race since that was the only way they could get away with bike stunts and speeding.

Build looks like a bug using Kikaider's color scheme, and they're going back to the "modified against their will" thing, which I approve.

Ex-Aid got this back too, the whole "people undergoing a modification surgery to become Kamen Riders", it's a huge revelation early on, especially upon the plot twist Emu Hojo (Ex-Aid) was the first one to be modified without him even being aware he had surgery performed upon and became Patient Zero for the Bugster Virus outbreak too

I've heard about those things with the regulation, but it still sucks they don't ride like they used to.

I wonder if they could do some dodge like film on private roads like bike manufacturers', or film the bike riding stuff as second unit stuff out of the country.

The problem is that it seems there aren't many of those in Japan... if at all. Only racing tracks for Initial D seem to be readily available, which is why Drive had to revolve around a Grand Prix. Granted, it works within Drive's theme, but it still sucks for all following Riders. Ex-Aid didn't even use his bike much, and AGAIN it was on a racing track. Which again worked in his show's context because he was in the Virtual Game Area of the in-show videogame "Bakusou Bike", a Hang-On type of motorbike game.

I started watching Kamen Rider shows earlier this year after a friend got me hooked on Ex-Aid. I've since watched Fourze, Amazon, Amazons Season 1, Decade, Gaim, Ryuki and Kabuto; and I've got a few others (Wizard, Drive and W) currently on the go.

I have no idea exactly what it is that appeals so much about tokusatsu to cause me to take such a deep dive into Kamen Rider specifically; but I love how every show I have watched, while sharing common themes and elements, manages to at least -feel- different. While I've only watched one Showa-era show, and that was entirely because I felt that I'd enjoy Amazons more if I at least watched the original first, I also like the vastly different tone and pacing it had to the Heisei-era stuff.

I'm looking forward to Build, because no matter how cramped Ex-Aid's ending is getting (at least the movie seems to give the show a more fitting, less rushed, ending!), it's gonna be nice to follow a KR show weekly from the start.

I hope you enjoy Build and I'm glad you're enjoying what you've seen.
Kabuto also had an english dub! Masked Rider Kabuto, I wanna show to my nephews sometimes to see if I can get them into Kamen Rider. I mean, kids like stuff as long as there's cool action and cool designs right?

Ex-Aid was so cool, I hope Build keeps the momentum going because Ghost was a god damn abortion.

My only real experience of Ghost is seeing the characters in the Ex-Aid Dr. Pac-Man movie. Am I right in thinking that it's a situation of the suit designs being really cool, but basically everything else being an absolute trainwreck; because I'll probably watch it for the suit designs and fights alone when I've absolutely exhausted everything else.

It's all to do with how such shows are handled when bringing them to English speaking audiences. Saint Seiya's English dub had, if I recall correctly, a Bowling For Soup song as its opening theme. Sad thing is, there's absolutely nothing preventing Seiya from being popular with an English speaking audience, beyond the fact it was handled poorly by the company dubbing it.

Depresses me that Harlock isn't more popular with English speakers, though, because Leiji Matsumoto is the fucking man, and given that my introduction to his work was Interstella 5555, I feel the need to watch and read as much of it as possible.

Well, the thing with Ghost is that the things that does well, it does REALLY well, but when it fails, it fails miserably.

I saw Galaxy Train as a kid I fucking love it, I should rewatch Harlock too. As for Kamen Rider, well Kabuto was dubbed in the philippines in english as I mentioned earlier. I don't know if it's because old man Saban has a monopoly and he's trying to protect it by not letting Toei know they could handle Sentai and Rider without a middleman americanizing, or if it's a legitimate true that anything that doesn't have american actors won't get the attention of american kids.

A lot of people mention "because the dub voices won't match the lips thus breaking the illusion" as an arguement to not dub anything liveaction for american audiences, but (warning :powerlevel: ) as a kid I never noticed the lipsync matching or not when I watched Mighty Morphin Power Rangers dubbed in Spanish. Hell, I dont even notice the dubs lipsync of any show or movie nowadays either, unless the dub is extremely shoddy (like Ninja Steel) but that's so rare to happen over here. Usually there's a quality control to the dubs so it feels natural (and get cemented into the pop culture collective mind, such as the narrator of The Wonderful Years, MacGuyver and Adult Goku being all the same voice actor, to the point that here in my country people believed The Wonderful Years was a MacGuyver prequel.)

I've seen bits of similar dubs for Blade and Decade, maybe Kiva, I forget, but there's only a full run online for Kabuto afaik.

I liked the Kamen Rider vs Super Sentai movie.

The Japanese know how to make an entertaining show, even if they make little to no sense.
