Voice actresses applying for roles in Kemono Friends anime must say how big their breasts are

Nobody expected anime TV series Kemono Friends to be a hit. A low-budget late-night short-form anime with crummy CG, it was originally green-lit as part of the promotions for a mobile game which was cancelled before the anime adaptation even premiered.

And yet, Kemono Friendswent on to become massively successful, touching the hearts of anime fans of both the human and penguin varieties. So with the series’ second season now in development, the expectations are higher, and the production team is holding an open audition for potential voice actresses to portray part of the cast of cute animal girls.

The form (which can be found here) starts out pretty simple, asking for the applicant’s name, address, and age. But then it delves into physical attributes, with boxes in which the applicant needs to enter her height and weight, before asking for her bust, waist, and hip measurements. And yes, these are required fields, meaning that refusing to tell the producers how large your chest is means you can’t submit the form.

It’s also worth noting that while the applicant’s measurements are a must, the section for academic and professional experience is optional, and can be left completely blank (though the box for “hobbies/special talents” must be filled in).

But while asking aspiring voice actresses for their measurements is unusual, it’s pretty much the norm for live-action acting and modeling in Japan. It’s also worth pointing out that, as per the Kemono Friendsapplication site, the producers aren’t looking just for voice actresses, but for members of a new idol unit, which in today’s industry means the voice actresses will expected to perform on stage in front of fans of the anime at promotional events. That puts them closer to the sphere of mainstream, in-front-of-the-camera entertainers, which in the Japanese show business world usually means having to fit with mainstream ideas of beauty.

Of course, many would argue that attractiveness isn’t something that can be determined by three body measurements, which is likely why the application requires a photograph as well.

So... does that mean they're willing to hire subpar voice actresses as long they have good looks?, man, i feel the second season is going to bomb really hard

This post leaves out the incrediblely important detail that Kadokawa essentially killed their golden goose by firing not only the director, but all staff and voice actors involved in the surprise smash hit because they wanted complete creative control.

Super fucking sad but not a surprise. Voice actors in Japan are usually treated with a bit more respect than the horrifying beast that is the idol industry, but it sounds like this is going to be incredibly sleazy and a corporate husk of its former self. I’m hoping anime fans will make the right move on this one and no longer support it.

Does Japan have the regressive left fever as bad as the US does? I feel as if this is only something that would go over badly with people over here....

I can see, though, that they aren't caving in to the "less sexuality pls" mentality people are throwing at Western media (not usually).

This probably doesn't mean anything. Fans that would care are already upset over the director scandal.

No way. Talking about politics day to day is considered pretty rude. Protesting was pretty much out of style until the Fukushima disaster, and is only recenly making a comeback. That being said this news definitely won’t be received well, but likely to standard degrees.
