This fucking blows. I was actually looking forward to finally catching up with Berserk hoping the ending was coming closer.

I'd say this, the band of the hawk arc alone is one of the best arcs on any manga ever, if not the best one
.Any Berserk arc could be read as a standalone and be a great time. Is almost like not finishing Berserk adds to the legend because the huge amount of work that is already there is already as influential as possible as it is.

It's one of those things that clearly could potentially go on forever with nothing about it that screams a story with a definitive ending.

I'd compare to the Evil Dead series, everything Evil Dead always ends with the potential for Ash to have more adventures, that's simply what works best for that story and character than anything like a definitive ending.

That also applies to Stephen King's The Dark Tower, which if you know how that ends you know what I mean.

We tend to want everything to have neatly wrapped up endings but sometimes maybe it's ok for a story to be about the journey and not the destination and leave something to your imagination, Kojima originally wanted Metal Gear to end with MGS2 and leaving the story open ended for example.

Its like a great modern epic, its sort of poetic, having this huge, influential tale that's touched the lives of so many. Leaving it unfinished probably ironically cemented it even more into 'legendary' status. He died as he lived, a poet and a story-teller.

It all makes sense, now. The real Guts was Miura himself. The real Berserker armor, slowly sucking his soul and peeling away years of his life while imbuing him with inhuman strength, was his deadlines.

I don't know why, but a few days before the news broke, I picked up the first volume and I hunted down the famous "Sad Guts" panel from the prologue. Such a weird coincidence. I don’t know what possessed me to do that.

The thread on /a/ has hit 23.1k posts already and rising steadily. People who slept through it are now waking up and flipping the fuck out. Some who went to bed last night hoping that it was just a bad dream are finding, with rising dread, that it was real. There are multiple posts of just endless screaming, pink Wojaks, Blade Runner memes, crying/depressed anime gifs, and sweating towel guy, as you would expect.

They are. But they take a little less space than the Hellsing paperbacks did, and I sold the paperbacks when they spiked in price and just replaced them with the hardcovers.

So sad. I followed Berserk for 10 years and was always looking forward to read new chapters. It's the only manga I follow.

Rather than just repeat what I said in the Anime/Manga thread, I'll admit that I got into Berserk through the original anime trailer with Forces playing in the background. It looked pretty amazing back then in spite of its old animation, capturing enough of the right moments to pique your curiosity:

If I recall, the lyrics were extremely fitting to Guts, being about a person struggling in his quest for someone else.

I also recall Miura said that Berserk was going to end in a way that not many people were expecting....he was right.

RIP Miura. Berserk was truly something.

Generally I don't give a fuck if some famous person died, even if I knew and liked them. This hits slightly different though, Berserk impacted me more than the vast majority of media. Maybe because I read it at the right age, maybe because it is just so good. Either way, Godspeed you glorious bastard I hope you don't have to spend ten years on a boat before reaching heaven.
