Double post but fuck it
>tfw your favorite long running manga comes to a complete stop because creator bro passes away

I remember when I first heard about the series and decided to not read it because it was unfinished and I wanted to wait for it to be done because I feared the author would die and bullshit ghostwriting would take over just like what happened with Wheel of Time.

Well I wasn't proved wrong....

Berserk is well worth reading even without an ending.

It shits on most completed manga.

Hell, it is worth reading for Guts character development alone.

Look, I deeply feel for everyone who stuck it through and cared so much. It also scared me to see how young he died. However, let this be a wake up call for all of us, a memento mori:

If you are working on a project and it's your great passion: FINISH IT

You can always add more to it later on, or do other things later on, or whatever. Just finish it. Especially writers, you don't want to be a lazy slob like George RR Martin and you don't want to die grasping between a work bench and Idol M@ster like poor Miura. Whatever you do, whatever you plan to do, whatever relies on you to see it through--FINISH IT

Finish it, guys... For Miura :heart-full:

Miura had plans to finish it tho. I read an interview (forgot the source) where he said he had the ending finally figured out.

Also there is something I never realized: Miura worked his ass off, had neither wife nor children, didn't go out often and yet he was able to realistically depict human relationships and feelings. He had lots of emphaty.

‘I was also really moved [by Casca’s revival]. The thing is, it’ll be difficult for Casca from here on out. To fully revive, she has to analyze and understand what happened to her on her own terms. She has to face up to what Griffith and the demons did.’
Kinda cute how he is moved by the events he himself created. His heart belonged to Berserk & its characters and he felt with them, regardless of gender.
This is a story about human beings, so it’ll probably end up that way. I have to think properly about what humans would do in this situation, or I won’t be able to create a proper story.’

Not just artists but also writers can learn a lot from him.

I've rewatched season 1 of new Berserk. I was in the minority who liked it back then and... it's still solid.

Theres far worse CGI shows (anything on netflix) and after awhile it's no different than watching video game cutscenes. I also like the storyline a lot, feels like an epic sequel to the eclipse proper. Music is god tier.

Season 2 though, yuck. I remember a common complaint about season 1 was it feels like a music video but damn it's season 2 that feels more like a series of AMV's to me. This is also where the animation gets pretty unforgivable. Story dragged a lot too.

Funny enough not more than a day or two the news broke he died, I played through the dreamcast game in a sitting since I'm on bedrest and stuck with a crtv. Was thinking by the end of it if the comic has continued at all in the years since I last read but of course...

I'm somewhat reminded of Richard Williams' The Thief and the Cobbler, a movie the man spent over 30 years trying to animate, and it still wasn't finished by the time the film's backers finally wrestled the cels out of William's hands and cobbled them together to make an Aladdin knockoff. The thing is, what we have of the movie is some of the most fluid, highly detailed animation ever created without CG. It's a masterpiece, but looking back at the whole affair, it's clear that if it's taking you 30 years to make a 2 hour movie, that maybe you have to trim back some of your ambitions, simplify some aspects of your work, and learn the value of brevity. While the artwork for Berserk is jaw-dropping, it might have been worth Miura's while to scale some of the detail back so that he could get his actual story out - then, once that's done, maybe go back and do a "special edition" with hyper-detailed artwork. I dunno. All artists have to create a balance between "wow factor" and "amount of time needed to get a work finished," and some just choose to burn large parts of their lives cramming as much "wow factor" into their work as possible, damn the consequences.

I i find it funny that the 9 series that person brought up are nowhere Berserks sheer scope and influence. I think the real issue is that mainstream comics cant move on from the same handful of legacy characters, and when they do, you get cringe like "The New New Warriors".
What we can say for certain is that Miura was an artist in all the sense of the word: he had his own vision and then perfected his craft to be able to express it in the way he wanted.

At the very least the story "ended" on a bittersweet note (our girl Casca is back). Right now the story lies on a weird crossroad: Guts doesn't know what to do now and Griffith has created heaven on earth with humans and demons working together. The question is would it be worth to pursue Griffith and end such paradise? Granted there seems to be some dark undercurrent on it all.
Unlike One Piece I don't mind not seeing an ending leaving it as an incomplete masterpiece, but Miura probably wanted to see his life's work completed.

In my opinion Berserk should end there. Everything that follows that's not done by Miura will never be as amazing and beautiful. Guts reached his goal, Casca is sane again & she and the rest of the group are safe, he even meets his son at the end. Even Griffith got what he wanted. The rest is left to the readers imagination.

There is a notable progression in Berserk, the very first arc is pretty rough and his art isn't quiet as polished, i actually didn't thought much of Berserk at first, just an buff edgelord with a big sword killing stuff but then you keep going and can feel Miura getting better and better at themes, subverting expectations and adding in all the depth to the story as well as the illustrations getting more confident and ambitious. You could tangibly see him working like a madman to get better and improve his craft and mature alongside the manga, thats the most inspiring thing of all about it

Don't know if anyone cares for Richard Meyer but he had some nice things to say about Miura.
Apologies if this was posted on any other threads.
He sounds like he's on Xannies, and his kind words pretty much amount to "welp, he's dead, no crying over spilt milk."

Oh and it looks like Berserk continuation is a GO GO GO!

So I just went and ordered the first four volumes of the deluxe edition of Berserk (covering the Golden Age Arc) which are all temporarily out of stock on Amazon (typically means that they'll be available within a month or so). I plan to buy all of them, but getting the first four with some conclusive arc seems the best. And considering its one of the most iconic modern fantasy series, it deserves a place on a shelf.

Yeah. I mean, it sucks it didn't get an ending. But at least it can end in a decent place. Just imagine if it ended and they were all stuck on the fucking. boat. That would be the real tragedy. I don't know if he had a will or anything but it will probably be unfinished. A lot of epic works by great creators go unfinished. Sometimes the fact that the work is unfinished cements them in history forever.

There might be some other chapters they might be finished that Miura was working on to make sort of an open-ended conclusion (but not a conclusive) ending. Its just too hard honestly. I'm sure there were things in the pipe that the assistants can finish up. So, maybe, (pulling out of my ass) another five or so chapters that they can sort of mold into an open-ended finale that's left up to the reader's imagination.

I get why they would want to continue but on the other hand Berserk without Miura means the quality will drop and this will upset tons of fans. But it will most likely still sell.

Let's just hope it doesn't turn into the next AOT.
I don't see Miura as being a dumb faggot troll like Isayama who wants to play in his urine infested onsen. Nor do I see his assistants shitting up the work of a legend. I think if they try to end it, it'll be very disappointing. I honestly think they should try to craft something out of the chapters they were working on to end it openly at the bittersweet crossroads with Guts and Casca and everything. Not try to finish it. Let people's imagination take it. That'd be a beautiful way to close it off. Readers would still get something and Berserk would still get crafted with a little bit of an ending. Not something total.

I'm really torn on whether or not I want it to continue after the work they have in the pipe is completed. Endings are nice, sure. But....still, it won't ever be the same. And I think with Berserk, the ending is less important, because its all about the journey of Guts, who turns from this cynical person into someone completely different. And its going to be hard for someone else to capture that. And his journey is there. And I think turning Guts from that cynical dark swordsman into someone who can see the value in life is more important than the resolution of the plot.

I'm watching Berserk on Youtube right now, first time watching the anime. It's pretty absurd how overtly Griffith telegrams how he'd do anything to enslave humanity as a god. He talks exactly like a sociopath complete with delusions of grandeur (think "Book of God" by Eric Harris), I think I personally would've bailed the instant he threw me some red, pulsating bauble that winked at me followed by a speech about how some gypsy gave it to him on the pretext it made him destined to rule the world. Griffith is insane & only values people for their usefulness.

I also thinking Sean Shemmel was a poor choice of actor for this series.
