It disgusts me on so many levels. When I had my daughter I couldn't lactate properly and my baby got scary thin. The midwives kept pressuring me to keep trying even when I suggested bottle feeding because it was so utterly important.
After two weeks in hospital with her and being monitored within an inch of our lives, after a doctor all but suggested we were neglecting her, they figured it out and scolded me for not trying a bottle of formula sooner...
I broke down as soon as I got home and, for the first time I was aware of what it was to physiologically be a woman, to nurse an infant and the fact that, without help, I would have failed her and she would have starved.... Well, makes sense that the only time you actually FEEL like a woman is when you're accutely aware that you're failing at a supposedly fundamental part of it.
It hurt beyond words at a time where (after a difficult birth and pregnancy) my whole life revolves around keeping my health up to care for something that was both a part of myself and far beyond that.
