It's 2,200 miles to Oregon, we got a full box of bullets, half a train of oxen, it's foggy, and we're wearing prairie bonnets.
Hit it.

We'll be playing the "Deluxe" version of the original game, which came out in 1992 for DOS and Macintosh and '93 for Windows. This adds fancy graphics and MIDI music, but the mechanics are pretty much identical to the original Apple IIc release. Shooting more meat than you can carry, fording a ten-foot deep river and drowning your wife, dying of cholera - it's all there, baby.

So let's jump in, shall we?

First things first - let's name our party of intrepid settlers.

Names have a maximum of ten characters.
First five posts, in order, will name our party members.
Names more than ten characters long will be IGNORED and rated as :islamic: ISLAMIC CONTENT. :islamic:

We will also need to choose our occupation. This chart has the deets.

We'll get a pile of cash to start with, depending on our occupation. Certain professions also come with a bonus - carpenters, for example, are more likely to fix broken wagon parts. Some also have a multiplier that gets applied to our score once we reach Oregon, but that's assuming we actually reach Oregon.

After five valid names are chosen, the next post will determine our occupation.

It's May 1, 1848, and we are just about ready to set off.

Starting now, we're in the game proper. Here's a list of regular actions we can do.

• Check Status - An update on our supplies, distance traveled, and health of the party.
• Rations - Change the amount of food each party member gets per day. The options are Filling, Meager, and Bare Bones.
  
  Current rations are Filling.
• Buy - Head to the store (if available) and exchange currency for goods and services.
• Trade - Find someone to barter with the old-fashioned way.
• Talk - See what some rando has to say about things. They might have helpful advice or historical information.
• Rest - Take a day or two off to recuperate if health and spirits are low.
• Pace - Set how much we travel in a day. The options are Steady, Strenuous, and Grueling.
  
  Current pace is Steady.
• HUNT - The best part of the game. Not available in or near towns, settlements, and river crossings.

Right now we can Set Rations, Set Pace, Buy, Trade, Talk, or Rest.
