We have a sizeable lump of users who greatly enjoy whimsical What If?-type questions and dreadful puns about lolcows. They are the gritty sediment at the bottom of the dregs of humanity, but nevertheless they are here.

Why not give them a subforum where they can post this kind of inane repartee to their hearts content? This would be wider than the original "bring back What If?" idea, because my idea would be more along the lines of Inner Circle, but for newfags and @normankrasner.

What say ye?

I generally like the idea of "containment threads", but here I'm just not seeing it. While it might help draw otherwise short one-liners and what-ifs out of each lolcow thread and into the containment zone, I think it is taking way too much away. Because there is no clear line for what belongs in the dumping ground and what is still viable to post to a lolcow thread.
As a result, I feel as if people would begin opting for posting there over posting in the respective lolcow thread too often. So while it may cut back on some filler posts, it's going to impact a much larger chunk of things and reduce post rates. The incentive for using the actual lolcow thread goes down.

Also we are getting a bit bloated with the amount of offshoot boards, containment threads, and their own specific little niche uses for small issues. If we attempt to solve every perceived issue by only creating more and more outlets, we lose a lot of browseability, navigability, focus, and become more offputting for new users to try and integrate with.

I was thinking it would be for threads which are too juvenile in tone for current forum culture - the CWC jokes thread, the CWC What If? thread, "Chris and Cole at the movies", various funposting threads about ADF.

But I can appreciate your concern about overresponding to small issues.

People who are interested in this kind of funposting could form a group, I suppose.

I like funposting and feel like it should be more incorporated into each thread and be left as part of it rather than pulled out.
As long as it's not occupying the majority of a thread and derailing it.
Of course it should be handled on a case by case basis and done so once a need for it pop up. Like the Chris What If? thread. It serves a great purpose, but it is also specific enough. Having some kind of giant umbrella to try and cover all funposting purposes just for people without Inner Circle access doesn't seem viable. Off-Topic already does this well enough. If you want to make a Kiwi Kidz Klub thread in Off-Topic you are more than welcome to. Really trying to avoid more new boards.

Why not just do it in Inner Circle?

Once they reached the posts needed to access it of course.

Sometimes I think half the users here just want threads to be their posts and the OP. Message boards are not a spectator sport.

The idea of building containment threads and entire containment forums is only good if registration is closed or new accounts flow in very slowly, otherwise we'll laugh nervously at the contained spergs for a while, and suddenly the entire forum consists of spergs who were supposed to be contained/laughed at. This is also one of the reasons why it's good that the forum is ruled from the top down : it acts as a safeguard against the entire forum turning slowly but steadily into something alien to it's original purpose by the will of the majority.

I feel that Community Watch in a lot of ways has become the Kiwi Kidz Club. It already has a goldmine full of honeypot threads and spergs who find them.
