KiwiOS - Linux pre-setup for Kiwis or, if you like, AutismOS

  • Intermittent Denial of Service attack is causing downtime. Looks like a kiddie 5 min rental. Waiting on a response from upstream.

Edit: Newest version here:

Note: Has some installer issues, unstable at present, use first version for now.

After reading the Software Endorsements thread, I noticed a lot of recommended Linux software for Kiwis. Since I figured it would be a hassle for most Kiwis to have to download it all, I decided to cobble together a custom Linux using the best suggestions from that thread with all the major recommendations for the optimal Kiwi shitposting experience.

It's based on Xubuntu 18.04.3 (LTS), meaning it will receive regular security updates until 2023.

It uses the XFCE desktop by default, as it was the best compromise between looking good and being fast, and you can see the readme file I included for all the other stuff included.

Despite the name, it's just a custom LiveCD of Xubuntu, it has no special Kiwi Farms branding, which would have been nice to include but I suck at that sort of thing.

It has been preconfigured to run with basic drivers for all sorts of graphics hardware and optimized for virtual machines like VirtualBox as well.

Should run quite well on anything made after 2012 or later.

Has several package managers, so if you need to customize it further after install, go nuts.

I cannot copyright this nor will I try, so if you want to customize and fork this, do whatever you want, it's free software after all.

Don't care much for Xfeces but I'll try it regardless.

I picked that as the default because I wanted to strike a balance between speed and not looking like shit.

LXDE/LXQT: They look like shit even if they are pretty fast.
MATE: Kinda clunky
GNOME: Fuck that noise.
Cinnamon: Rather like it, but a resource whore.
KDE: Resource whore.

XFCE isn't my favorite either, but I wanted something that will run nice on somewhat aging toasters, if only to try it out. You can always install something less terrible later.

I wanted this to boot reasonably fast on a somewhat mid-range PC at worst as a LiveCD, work in a VM, and boot fast for a dedicated OS, so I had to pick optimal balance between performance and looking good.

I like MATE, but then again I'm tainted by fond memories of GNOME before it turned into a smartphone shell.

It's not bad, but XFCE is a lot simpler and I wanted something fairly easy to use as the default. MATE is a bit complicated for someone who never used it, and it still comes close to being a serious resource whore at times.

Since everything boots into memory as a LiveCD, I found I needed a book to read while waiting for the system to boot with the more memory whorish options on somewhat aging hardware.

Is this what you use when you are browsing for your lolita anime porn?
No, that's what TAILS is for.

Fair point, my hardware goes on two ranges of "gaming PC" to "vintage computers." I don't think Linux runs on a C64 or a PowerBook, so I have never had a practical test of boot times on low end hardware. Why not make this a git repo so Kiwis can help flesh it out with pull reqs?
