What were the positives and negatives? I don't want to shit on people doing one of the hardest things in the world at all. I've simply noticed that there appears to be no middle ground on whether it is a good idea or a bad idea.

it comes with it's own set of baggage.

If she has a kid that means you'ree going to be the one paying for everything in the future so it relies on you having a good job.

If She's on bad terms with her ex-husband, expect constant fights and drama from that because he will crash everything out of spite.
Seems to be the case. Irl ones that work make up the minority. Seems to be double the fun if said kid or kids have special needs.

Do you like her? Are you willing to deal with her kid?

If yes then congratulations you have a nice relationship. If not then find someone else. It's literally just another relationship lmao.

Meh, it was fine.
It only lasted like six months though.
Father wasn't in the picture so he wasn't really a problem for me.

Good luck scheduling anything around her kids, especially if they're toddler age. That becomes an order of magnitude harder if there's no extended family to help out.
THIS.
We almost never got any alone time.

I did once, briefly. She had two girls, 5 & 7. Both with different fathers; one dead, the other left for cigarettes.

The first "date" consisted of trying to watch a movie with their mom while also doing basic shit, like watching the kids put on a show, cooking them dinner, etc.

Honestly, I was absolutely not impressed with the mom. She yelled at the girls for small, really innocuous things, and had absolutely no idea how to make the girls follow directions.... besides being just dumb & boring company.

At the end of the night, it had gotten extremely late, and I was putting on my boots to leave. The two had already been put to bed but refused to sleep. Then they came out in their pajamas w/ blankets & animals, planted themselves at my knees, and asked me if I was going to stay. Their mom just said, "well, now you don't have a choice".

Holy fuck.... the crazy bitch she right; that was a hard spot, and I gave in. That lasted about three months, before I'd had enough of their unstable mother and had to leave. Shit was one of the hardest things I had to do, because of those kids. They were sweet, well behaved & smart, as long as they had a normal parent present. I absolutely knew I was being a replacement dad at the start, so I just tried to be a good one, for their sake, for as long as I could.

Have fun! By which I mean, please die.

If the kids are 10+ you're going to be dealing with the "your not my dad" attitude and possibly emotional baggage. If they're like 6 and bellow you won't have to deal with the weird social shit, just actual shit.

In terms of you, are you as a person ready to go into a situation where being a pseudo -daddy is expected? (and not always the fun kind)

She taught the kids to do that. Guarantee it.
