Unfortunately Warriors Orochi 4 was crap and apparently the updated rerelease is worse. Compared to WO3: Ultimate though.

The Zelda and Dragon Quest warriors games are quite fun though.

Some require you to kill 2,000 bosses. it takes 5-8 hours alone to do this, and I mean optimal just to find the right spot and have the turbo controller auto attack while you go out and do errands.

was ( i still am i think) a HUGE dynasty warriors/samurai warriors fan. got dynasty warriors 4 from my father and i liked it but quickly begin to struggle. i just started middle school and asked my class m8s if they played the game. by some miracle, one guy did and he showed me after school were i fucked up (by not using items beacuse i was retarded) and we still friends til this day.

played most games in the series. would recommend you start with DW5 since its the most polish of the ps2 titles but still has the "soul" of the old school DWs. loved the fuck out of DW8 and have over 100 hours of play on it and all characters to atleast around level 100. heard DW9 was awful but i will try it someday. the samurai warriors series is also good and replayed the first game a few months back. im still salty its no stable way to play SW2XL. it is that one game i still want to play years later but just cant.

the orochi series is like a fan love latter from the devs to the fans. you get to play as you favorite characters from the both series and control three of them at the same time!? AWESOME!!. one was a bit meh but orochi two was just perfect. played a bit of three and liked it but never did buy a copy since i was dirty poor at the time. may look into 4 in the future.

KOEI Techmo are the best worst video game developer around. Their games are consistently shit, but they're the best shit games.

Hyrule Warriors was awesome though, but they had to work with Nintendo who enforced quality standards upon them. Standards like:

• make sure the game is finished
• make sure the game isn't completely broken
• make sure the game is fun
• no Lu Bu this time (though I think they cheated on this one)

Lu Bu is pretty consistently S tier. He was downright fucking broken in DW5 - insane reach, power, fantastic combos and Musou/True Musou. Even decent at mounted stuff.

I loved the DW games as a kid, but growing up I really enjoy ROT3K way more. Like @Marissa Moira said, way too grindy to be enjoyable. It's just a lazy way for Koei to get out of making more in-depth scenarios. Funny enough, Dynasty Warriors 5 was the peak, specifically Empires/Xtreme Legends. 5 Empires OST is carved into my soul, and all three of the games had amazing openings:

Since we're talking about Dynasty Warriors for a moment, are any of the DW clones worthwhile? I'm talking Fate/Extella, Senran Kagura (lol), Earth Defense Force, Daemon X Machina, or... shit do they still make Gauntlet games? I guess Gauntlet isn't really like DW. Anyway you get what I mean.

I played EDF a long long time ago but can't say I remember much from it. And the Daemon X Machina demo was... alright?

Big fan of the Dynasty Warriors series, though I admit I got into it a little late in the game. Started with 6, moved on to 7, and 8 was my absolute favorite one. The series actually got me really into the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, so much so that I ended up reading the novels twice and watched the Chinese Drama. I haven't played DW9, only because I saw it seemed to be a major step down from 8.

Samurai Warriors and Warriors Orochi are games I have little experience with. I got Warriors Orochi 4 for the Switch as a gift, and it didn't really do anything for me in terms of fun.

I've actually never played a Samurai Warriors game, but I would like to some day.

The only good Koei game is Atelier Ryza and that was made by Gust.

Atelier Ryza is a very bad Atelier game and the sole reason why it's often "recommended" is because it's the latest title of the franchise and the sheer amount of fanarts it got as advertising.

-characters besides Ryza herself barely hold any weight in the story, which is itself linear instead of being branched out into different routes and endings depending of your affection level with other characters and personal achievements (such as being filthy rich or because you baked a lot of pies for example) like it was the case in Atelier Arland and Dusk games. This also heavily affect the replayability.
-voice-acting in Ryza is completely absent outside of story events, in contrast where Atelier Rorona, Totori, Meruru, Ayesha, etc had voice-acting even on characters routes.
-combat doesnt involve any type of strategic thinking besides just smashing the attack button and the tactics level of your main character while the rest of the party controlled by the AI also does most of the job. It's also a weird hybrid of the queue system while everything else acts in real-time, meaning a party character with a far higher speed stat can be still slower than everyone else because of his/her attack animations. Manually selecting skills can also cost you "turns" if you're hesitant on what to choose.
-alchemy was okay-ish though it's easy to break the (already easy) game early if you know what you're doing since there is no time limit/managment to handle.

Nevermind Ryza also continues (since Lydie & Suelle) the trend of charging you for extra stories and other things separately when you can get the Atelier Arland (Rorona, Totori, Meruru) and Dusk trilogy (Ayesha, Escha&Logy, Shallie) for a lot less without any DLC bullshit too.

Ryza is the only game in the series with an actual properly designed battle system that wasn't some default RPG maker system.

I say this as someone who owns the saturn games. They coasted along for decades with minimal effort and Ryza was the first one where you could see they put more effort into it than the last 3-6 games. Things started to change with Sophie but it took 4 games of them fucking up with them finally getting it right. The Twins game was bad, the 4th Arland game was bad, the fucking Town management game was a huge ass fucking slog. But Ryza struck the perfect balance between having a proper battle system in a proper game that gave you significant freedom.

Now only if they could fix the redundant dialogue because it still takes characters 3 paragraphs to say something that could be said in one sentence. it reeks of a silted translation team who wants to be super fucking grammer accurate to real deal japanese.

They also cut the voice acting because it was too expensive and as I said, after Sophie the series bombed multiple times in a row. So that was cut in order to save money, because when you get down to it voice acting really is not that important to an overall game series. Especially if it's suffering from major gameplay problems. The third game in the Mysterious Trilogy was when they scaled back the voice acting. So if you played the first two games in English it was jarring to hear Sophie's voice in japanese because there was less voiced lines and also no english VA's.

Also on characters not holding any weight to the story besides the MC, that's the whole series in a nutshell. None of the side characters are all that memorable that's why they have former MCs return as party members in future games. They're the only ones who have any real development and are the ones that people care about. You have no equivalent of a Tifa, Cid, Zell, Fran, or Barret in the whole series.

It's not a "properly designed battle system" if the hybrid system like I described earlier is this poorly implemented and just require button smash on attack and quick commands in order to win all battles even the bosses, without breaking any sweat (while said system doesnt encourage players to use skills unless those skills have been memorized by heart in terms of effect and animation length and players are quick to select them from the menus in order to not lose "turns"). It may be fine to you since you seem to favor action-paced rather than turn-based gameplay but it's objectively a mess.

And Atelier was mainly a Playstation thing with some Nintendo handheld releases, pre-Switch. There was only one Atelier game on Saturn so I dont get what you're trying to do with that lie. I do agree at least on the Mysterious trilogy and Lulua being mediocre Ateliers for various reasons, but Ryza is among that group too.

Once again, Atelier Arland trilogy and Dusk trilogy are much better games overall than Ryza and without any DLC crap either

Atelier was never a franchise with a lot of budget in the first place since its birth. Cutting down a feature that was predominant (and gave life to the previous games) while asking the customers to spend money on DLCs for the equivalent price of the base game (while said story DLCs arent fully voiced either) certainly isnt a good excuse. Sounds more like Koei and Gust were trying to cheap their way in.
