Strype's reputation has been in the gutter for a few years now. At one point he owed over 100 commissions, many of which still remain uncompleted. He became one of those names (like Jailbird) that was equivalent to setting your money on fire because you'd never get the art or your money back.
In some cases, they're very aware but continue to commission them. Jailbird gets multiple comments on each of her commission openings from people she's owed for over a decade and she still manages to get people to give her money. Really seems to be an issue revolving around "old guard" artists who've been in the fandom for a substantial amount of time, they become these people's "dream" artists so they're willing to run the risk of buying the art just at the possibility of getting it finished and not being another victim.
Oh of course these artists still get the same dumb paypigs who commission them time and again while still waiting on a rediculous amount of owed commissions. I do know a few people who knowingly still try to commission artists like Jailbird and Strype despite knowing their histories; I just don't consider any of those people friends. People that fall so much in 'love' with a pacticular artist they're willing to just throw money away at them just to get that dream art piece deserve the decades of waiting they get.
Furries are probably where parasocial relationships truly began to form with how common furries orbit creators and have for at least 20 years. If not where it started, then it's at least where it became more finely tuned. But I'm getting off topic.
