God damn this game. Since I guess I'm the slasher game guy I thought I'd make a thread about this title.
There's been all kinds of drama with this game. It started as a Kickstarter game. Then there was some controversy during the Kickstarter when the devs posted concept art where a killer (killers are now known as Fiends and I'll get to that later) that looked eerily like a certain Hockey Mask killer.
Some behind the scenes shit happened, bootleg Jason was never added to the game, and the game spent five years in development with barely a word from the devs.* This is what it originally looked like three years ago:
Then it finally launched... Exclusively on Discord. "How, when, why on Discord?" You say? Well, for a few months Discord had a store and wanted to rival the other platforms and then the Epic store happened and all of the exclusive launch titles they paid for (including Last Year) flopped. It was at this point the game was renamed to Last Year: the Nightmare. I guess to give it a more unique title that would be easy to Google search? Originally, the Kickstarter promised a game that emphasized stealth and promised features such as calling the police (similar to Friday the 13th: the Game). Some diehards were pissed off that the gameplay changed to more of an action-based title similar to Left 4 Dead.
The game belly flopped on release. Glitches, low player base, and horrific imbalance just like the rest of the Slasher games. After a few updates the devs abandoned ship until...
They're even adding another character The Priest:
This is why killers are referred to as Fiends so I expect a Frankenstein monster or werewolf or Slender Man knock off at some point. Devs' excuse for not updating the community? They didn't want to interact with trolls. There may be some drama there. I'm an asshole so I bought it, been having some fun with it. The killer feels much more powerful and in control in this game as opposed to the others but an organized team that know what they're doing can still push your shit in. Balance is in flux and it's too early to say it's borked. Thought I'd make a thread to stir some interest and like DbD cover any drama.
*It should be noted that the devs Elastic Games are Canucks, just like the devs for Dead by Daylight. Which means that they've been feeding off of government incentives.
