ADF isn't really my cup of tea a lot of the time but Latinx is definitely real. so is Latin@

i went to a small, prestigious liberal arts college (so, uh, exactly the kind of place you're imagining) and professors and students would use that terminology as a means of referencing that cultural/ethnic identity without gendering the word. so if i'm talking about "Latinx experiences" or something, you know I mean both "latino" and "latina" experiences AND, if i'm being appropriately intersectional, experiences of transpeople who identify with the same culture/ethnic identity but do not identify as "latino" or "latina" due to the gender binary imposed by the spanish language.

google scholar searches for Latinx show people using it in academic literature as well as dubiously transliterated latin texts. i was always under the impression that it was one of those words that was making its way into the literature from the blog/internet world of identity politics--you'd be surprised (or maybe you wouldn't) at how regularly that happens now.

as far as i can tell there is very little jargon that ADF uses that is actually unique to ADF. like, transautistria or whatever is novel, but a lot of it is born out of real stuff

Somehow, I'm not surprised. Phil isn't particularly original. But I've never heard anyone call themselves a 'latinx,' then again I also don't know many SJW types either so I guess I should count myself lucky in that regard. It is interesting that the author appears to be another bearded cishet male who wants to call himself 'latinx' for... some inscrutible purpose. He also seems to glom onto any cause that's seen as 'non-white,' yet he's still infinitely more bearable than Phil.

I will say that his definition of 'Latin' is incredibly broad. Very few people would consider people from the Dutch, French or English Caribbean to be 'Latino.' By that definition you might as well count the Florida Keys or US Virgin Islands as 'Latino' too. Ditto for the predominantly Indo-Caribbean communities in Trinidad, or the Portuguese-speaking Brazilians (who are often either amused or annoyed by Americans assuming they speak Spanish). I'd also dare to venture many of the purely American Indian communities left in Central and South America might take issue with being called 'Latino,' especially as some have fought to preserve their language, culture and religion in the face of Spanish dominance.

I'm also rather amused by the Euro-American presumption that all Latina women are curvy. Indeed that seems to be some of the impetus for fat white women to try and identify with 'Latina' culture. Having dated a Mexican woman (as in, a woman born in Mexico) I can say that there are quite a few skinny, even flat chested Latina women.

Wow... that's horribly depressing. I'm all for inclusion and using proper terminology but somehow I find it insulting that internet bullshit is filtering down into academia.

The "-x" shit was made up by some German "professx", so it was "academic" (in quotation because cultural studies / gender studies are not legit academic fields) from the get go.

Damn, that is like, porn-level stereotyping there...

Yea I met a girl at my uni who identifies as Latinx. I was pretty surprised to find out it wasn't something Phil pulled out of his ass.
You never know: she could have been a ginger in disguise. ;)

Why not just use "Latin" then? As in "Latin America?"

Because that's smart and solves a problem that was created on purpose to derive meaning from a degree so useless it makes Kent Hovind's degree look real.

I seem to remember something about latin@ being used to save on type face or something for papers or something like that. I believe primarily official papers. So that has some legit reasoning.

White women trying to justify their obesity by associating with Hispanic culture sickens me.
Should we really be surprised though? Ironically, SJWs are often some of the most pertinent arguments for white privilege themselves.

As far as "latinx" I'm not surprised at all that he didn't make it up. There really is no bottom to this shit. I just don't understand how the shit is pronounced. Do you say "Latin ecks?" And if so how clumsy is that?

Latin-ecks sounds like a type of feminine hygiene product.

I saw that word used a lot before I even knew Phil, and it was only in SJW circles. They enjoy adding 'x's to the end of things as a sort-of rejection of the gender of that thing. As was previously mentioned in the thread, I think it was started by a German female professor who decided the title 'professor' was too gender-biased towards males, so she changed it to 'professx'.
