While the title means THE CAT, I'm curious as to whether there's a plugin for the forum to enable chatting between users?
I guess it could be abused, but I'd totally use it. Might also increase posting as people would stay on the forums longer (provided they used the chat).

P.S. Added bonus - people not shitting up threads with idle conversation

I've been looking into IRC chats for PHPBB but there are no good results. I can either embed a Java chat applet into the template or something like a shoutbox feature.

How much control do you have over the VPS? Simply make a link to an AJAX chat that is installable on the server. AJAX does not use Java (which is actually considered a no-no to run in the browser now), the only requirements being a modern browser.

It's pretty easy to say that we already have the chat that Surtur made, but in all honesty there's quite a few people who really hate the banned members who frequent there (yes, I know hate's a strong word and all, but people have been taking quite a few shots at them whenever possible). Granted, I'm going to be a bit more partial to said banned members because I frequent the chat too, but still...I know that'd keep a bunch of people off who would otherwise go onto a CWCki chat.

There was an old forum I used to frequent which had an AJAX chat client and it worked extremely well. It required registration before being able to use as it was tied to the forum itself, so it was able to keep out banned members or other unregistered lurkers without a hitch. Overall it worked very similarly to IRC. I think it'd be a perfect way of implementing a chat here. That, and it's free.

It's been premium since the first Forumer forum went down. There's no limit, and there's a PM function. No ignore function though, which actually does make people want to switch to IRC for some reason.

It's premium for a bit longer. Mew bought the premium before he got banned. It has another month of premium i think.

Another downside to the Chatzy chat is that you need to create an account to use it, and if we had a chat system here, you'd just use the same account as the one here. Although the account is free to make. Just sort of time consuming.
