Legend of Legaia (レガイア伝説, Regaia Densetsu) is the first installment in the Legaia series, produced by Contrail, Inc. and developed by Prokion Ltd. in 1998. The original script was written by Hidenori Shibao, the game being directed by Kazuhiro Kobayashi and produced by Takahiro Kaneko. Legend of Legaia is a fully 3D RPG, being almost entirely rendered in polygons, with the exception of some two-dimensional backdrops. It features turn-based RPG gameplay with a twist based on fighting games, including Japanese character voices during battle and a unique storyline.

Legend of Legaia sold near 975,000 copies globally, selling approximately 314,500 copies in Japan and 660,000 copies in the rest of the world. In 2001 it was re-released in Japan under Sony's Playstation: The Best label. That same year a sequel to the game was released titled Legaia 2: Duel Saga.

A light novel based on the events of Legend of Legaia titled Novel: Legend of Legaia was published by Enix in Japan in 1999. it was written by Takashi Umemura and Hoshio Hyakutake.

I wonder if any of you guys had played this game series before?

It's so good yet pretty for its time. The sequel kinda killed the series for Sony. I hope one day Sony remakes it for the PS4. But who knows at this point.

PS4 remakes for some PS1 or PS2 exclusives would be a good idea that I don't understand that they didn't come to their mind after the Crash nsane trilogy being a top-selling.

I played up until the part with the three one on one boss fights in a row.

Maybe it’s because I didn’t grind but holy fuck that part was ridiculous.

In addition to not being able to save before the fight and having to spend ten minutes going through the dungeon each time, the bosses all had super lengthy unskippable special attack sequences that they loved to use repeatedly.

TBH, I wasn’t all that invested in the game by that point, so I gave up.

Nice music at least.

That was creepy. I rented Legend of Legaia a couple of times from Blockbuster back in the day and that's the main thing I remember, unless I'm thinking of a different game.

Great game. Never did beat it, though. Got to the final boss, lost and just kind of dropped it. I remember bosses in general being tough, with most having super attacks that slap your whole party around.

This game had a great battle system and a killer soundtrack.

I remember when my buddy sold a bunch of games to afford the second one. He was so disappointed, lol.

Yeah, that's what I remember. It's in the category of JRPG's "I rented from Blockbuster and rented enough times to almost beat but couldn't defeat the final boss".

I think I briefly considered buying Legend of Legaia but then rented Star Ocean: The Second Story and decided I'd rather own that one instead. And I don't regret buying the latter considering SO2's high replay value, though if I saw Legend of Legaia at Value Village for a reasonable price, I'd probably buy it.

It's best to buy it on pirate bay or get a copy of it online.

Oh fuck, I remember this game. I got hooked on playing Baka Fighter in Sol Tower. Never could beat the actual game though.

Not a true sequel. The battle system is largely the same and every character has an elemental avatar type thing attached to them similar to the ra-seru from the original, but the stories aren't related.

A lot of people seem to rag on it, but I thought it was a pretty decent game. It just wasn't as good as the original.

Also, doesn't help that it sold poorly and PlayStation and Sony have not renewed the IP rights ever since.

There's a fanbase that exists on a forum site trying to keep this game series alive. But it's more likely Sony will make a Jak & Daxter 4 than Legend of Legaia 3.
