Legend of the Galactic Heroes (銀河英雄伝説 Ginga Eiyū Densetsu), referred to as Heldensagen vom Kosmosinsel (incorrect German, translating to "heroic tales from the cosmic island") in the opening credits and sometimes abbreviated as LOTGH (銀英伝 Gin'eiden), is a series of science fiction novels written by Yoshiki Tanaka. In humanity's distant future, two interstellar states – the monarchic Galactic Empire and the democratic Free Planets Alliance – are embroiled in a never-ending war. The story focuses on the exploits of rivals Reinhard von Lohengramm and Yang Wen-li as they rise to power and fame in the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance respectively.

An anime adaptation of the novels, produced by Kitty Films and animated for the most part by Artland and Magic Bus, ran from 1988 to 1997. There is also a manga based on the novels, with art by Katsumi Michihara. In addition, there are several video game adaptations with the most recent release in 2008 being a real-time strategy game. The series did not receive an official English release until 2015, when North American anime and manga distributor Viz Media announced they had acquired the license to the novels. On the same day, North American anime licensor Sentai Filmworks announced their license to the anime and the anime was later released on Hidive starting on June 20, 2017.

A new anime adaptation by Production I.G ran from April to June 2018, along with a film series that will premiere from September to November 2019.

One of the most interesting series ever. I wonder if you guys ever heard of it?

I know the light novels have been licensed in the states, and the original OVA is 110 episodes that were released over a nine year period.

It's one of my all time favorite animes. I highly recommend trying it out as it's one hell of a ride if it manages to get you invested in it. This is ye olde guide to getting into the series. A bit outdated but still helpful.

Torrents of the Central Anime sub are pretty easy to find and it's also on free albeit sketchy streaming sites such as Kissanime. As pointed out in the OP the OVA can be legally streamed on Hidive.

The OVA starts out a little slow but people generally agree that the teens is where it picks up. From there it keeps a fairly consistent momentum until near the very end of the series IMO.

I didn't watch past the first episode of the new remake so I can't give a complete appraisal of it but I found the character designs very off putting, which is a problem when the bulk of the run time is people talking to each other.

I love the series. Still haven't finished it due to a particular death toward the end hitting me like a bag of bricks. But I'll finish it eventually. The entire thing is up on Youtube for those too lazy to torrent: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLngyRGSBvhaXG3SDosT4ZK80pl8bgi94P

Some advice, ignore the previews at the end of the episode and try to tune out the narrator because that faggot ass spoils the shit out of everything. The OVA series has extremely niche appeal, so when it was made it was assumed the audience already was heavily familiar with the novels that inspired the series hence their reckless disregard for spoilers. This is also true for within the episodes although less so. I'm sure you can find an episode guide that helps you navigate the treacherous waters. I also could of sworn there was a specific fansub that toned down the spoilers, but I could be misremembering since its been a long lonnng time. Enjoy!

I started watching the original series a long while ago but never got far into but It was great. I'm able to keep up with books better so I just picked up the first 3 english translations a while ago. I've only finished the first book but it was fantastic. It mostly alternates between a chapter dedicated to the Alliance with subchapters normally going to different areas in command and their responses to the events unfolding, same with when it goes to the Empire. There were only 3 major battles in the first book but how it handled it was great, basically every subchapter for that would flip between Reinhard and Yang so it communicated really well how each side was dealing with things. I haven't started the second book yet but I'm really looking forward to it. The art on the covers is great too and really stands out.

I saw the original a few months ago. It's undoubtedly one of the best anime I've ever seen.

Classist.

OH MY GOD. I love this show. Like really, it's one of my all time favorites. It's 11/10 and I highly recommend anyone who hasn't seen it to watch it!

I really liked the sad ending of the Mittermeyer-Reuenthal plot arch, it was almost Shakespearean. The way they handled the destruction of the Free Planets was also really good IMO

The greatest anime ever made, bar none. So many memories watching it for the first time. I was depressed for a while after when I finished it right back where it starts with the Overture to a New War movie. Except for Golden Wings, fuck that shit, I wish they would've redone the movie in those Gaiden OVAs as another 2-4 episode arc, it could've been really good if done in the style of the originals instead of being like some weird Chinese bootleg version of LOGH.

Also the narrator (Yuusaku Yara) is the best in all anime. While I don't mind the remake, one of my biggest problems almost as much as the character design is the shitty narration. I thought it was going to suck when I heard the narrator there. They should've gotten the narrator from Jojo to do it, because he sounds similar.
