I've started this kind of thread before, featuring Olivier Ledroit, so this time I wanna talk about another artist's work, and that is Alex Alice.
Alex Alice's art didn't shook me like Olivier does in terms of effort, because Alex's art style seems more common, even if it isn't less difficult. But AA was actually "that" comic artist that pulls me into the world European comics.
The work I read was Alex Alice's Siegfried. Man, it was so beautiful.
His treatment of colors is so spot on, it brings out the right atmosphere and feeling of the events. And his line work, it's so sublime. His style of aesthetic definitely fits with me. I like how he draws his male handsome and his females pretty/beautiful, usually I am not fond of ugly/realistic faces even if it's well done, because it makes the artwork feels stiff. It's comic, not a photo.
In fact, if I am not wrong, Siegfried got some what famous in Europe and has an animation produced out of his comic. Which is well deserved, it's 3 volume is nicely written and drawn.
Alex's past work isn't that great though, I can't find many of them, but what is prominent is "The Third Testament" series. With the 2nd series titled "The Third Testament - Julius". I won't delve much in to the story here, but the art of the series wasn't that great, not bad, but not mind-blowing. In Julius, his quality definitely picks up a lot (very good), and then in Siegfried it goes "Wow".
His latest series is "Castle in the Stars", and all I can say is "WOWWWW" again!
His colors just gets more beautiful and his linework gets even softer/sublime, it's just insaneeeeee! European artists it seems, when they paint, they give it their all and more.
Sadly, due to the amount of work & effort he pours out for each series, we won't be getting much more of Alex's work I think. "Castle in the Stars" is his latest work, and Siegfried spans a decade for 3 volumes, if we are lucky, he will produce another series before he dies. But seeing how beautiful Castle in the Stars is, his latest series will definitely blow my mind.
European artists, are really great, but somehow, I think they need to learn a thing or two from the Japanese and Hong Kong artists in terms of production speed. They need to learn how to recruit and train assistants, because drawing everything alone consumes a lot of time, and most Japs and Hongkies uses a number of assistants, that's why Hongkies can produce at the rate of 2-3 weeks per chapter, which is insane speed when looking at their quality. Whereas if we are lucky, European artists will produce 1 volume a year.
I've read almost all of his comics after I saw Siegfried. Story wise Siegfried is great since it is a classic story, so he just have to adapt. Castle in the Stars is also good. And "The Third Testament" has potential, but hampered by his storytelling abilities. But here's hoping he can produce another great series, and hopefully it will sell well for him.
