Yume Nikki(Dream Diary) Is a old RPG maker game about just exploreing the dream world of Madotsuki and collecting effects.

This LP will be Semi blind as I have not seen anything from this game for well over 11 or more years.

My first time seeing this game was watching a LP A long long time ago on youtue. So long in fact I've forgotten the name of youtuber who played it and later played .flow(a fan game).

I kind of remember a few broad strokes, but It's been so long even those are very fuzzy. Because this will be semi blind. If you are going to say something thats in relation to a spoiler for something we have not come across in the LP use a Spoiler tag.


Epsiode 1: Dream a Dream.

Diary is just the fancy wording for Load Game.

We wont be dropping effects for a long long time.

This is our room, it has no music.

This is Madotsuki, she is a shut in. Atleast from what I can tell she is.

Heading down too the window door

Will lead us outside the room. I always got Feels good Inc vibes from this place.

back inside we can interact with the console with the Z button.

Side Note: You can't open that door above the tv in the real world doing so, just makes her shake her head.

And here the walk cycle for her.

There is only one game.

Thats Nasu the goal is to Press the interact key to make him jump and eat the egg plants.

Letting one hit the ground is a game over.

When you do hit the interact button this is what the jump looks like.

Interacting with the chair. We sit in it.

This means we can save here by pressing the interact key again.

To the right is the bed thats how we enter the dream world.

Pressing 9 she pinch herself and wake up.

In the dream world our room has music.

We can interact with the Tv to make a eye appare on it, but sometimes if we interact with it this happens.

We can exit this event anytime we like.

If we sit in the chair in the dream world and interact. It spins in place and we can move it around freely.

We can now also enter the door she would shake her head at before.

The dream world has a ton of doors inside to many diffrent places.

I'll end this first update here and let you guys pick what door we enter first.

I actually found out about this game on 4chan’s Otaku Culture board, /jp/.

They love this JRPG, along with Touhou (unsurprising), RPG Maker, hentai visual novels and Japanese V-tubers.

In fact, I think they did a thread about this weeks ago.

Wouldn't be surprised if they made one once a week. This game got a cult following like ao oni does. Hell just look at all the fan games.

As for fangames, Yume 2kki is the one I enjoy the most. An entire board on 2chan works on it, and as such has a variety of worlds, music, and events. Oh, and you can combine certain effects. After you finish Yume Nikki I highly recommend playing it.

.flow is more macabre than Yume Nikki or Yume 2kki, and Lcddem is more tranquil, if you'd want to play any of those games in the future.

Epsiode 2:Eyes, color, snow and 8bit weirdness.

(Post script notice. I am a very stupid and forgot I need to press 1 to use effect powers. So don't plan on seeing any of what the effects do. )

But first There something I need to go back to in the real world.

I didn't mention this before but "Press ESC to quit" is wrong. I had to do some googleing and to quit this mini game you need to HOLD X.

On topic of NASU when googleing to find out why pressing ESC key didn't work it turns out there also a hidden easter egg code.

By Pressing left left right right up down up down.

The head turns into a egg plant when you start the game.

Back to the red door we end up in this dark and depressing void of a world.

Just walking around We find some lamps you can interact with them to turn them on and off.

I spend a a good five to ten minutes just walking around finding much other then a lamp or two sprewn about.
At this point I use pinch because I can't find the door.

@A single cheeto Wants us to LOOK at the world the eyeball door goes to. Let's SEE what is inside then.

It has quite the pair of peepers.

Oh look Eyeballs who would have SAW this coming. Also some weird art on the background.

A hand? Coming out of the ground. judgeing by the blood under it, someone gonna need a Hand.

Interacting with it does nothing.

Looking around a bit we find these.

Look like these two was buried up to the head. The bright one doesn't seem to mind much.

Small note that background image slowly drifts around the background.

Oh man look at all these eye balls. Like a massacure happened here.

We find our first effect NPC

I wondered a bit more around and pinched her cheek to get out because I couldn't find the door.

Anyway I'll pick the next door or two. Let's start with this purple door.

Oh a snow world.

This has to be my favorite song so far. There is a very calming yet lonely, and forboding feeling to it.

Just aimlessly walking about we find this thing (It's faceing backwards). And a igloo.

Sadly empty. Maybe the thing outside is the owner.

More walking and we find a town of igloos? Would it be called a town?

Let's check them all out.

This one is empty on the inside like I am.

Ditto for the second one.

And behind Door three is?

Nothing!

We find a sleeping child in the fourth one. Could they be like us wandering around aimlessly, or maybe they live here? What ever it may be we can't wake or do anything with em right now.

Thats the last one, Guess I'll go back to walking about.

This time I found a bed. Why did someone craft a lovely bed and leave it here. Who cares let's get in it.

Sadly it doesn't seem we can fall asleep while asleep. No Dream a Dreaming for us it seems.

The door was also pretty close to the bed, and with that, it's back to the hub.

And for our last main world of this update let's check this purple door.

What in the hell? This place is pretty weird compared to the other ones.

The big guys don't move or do anything but the tiny purple things look like they might be bowing or something.

These guys come in quite a few diffrent colors.

This floating things moves around a lot faster then other NPCS

Look at it go.

Took me like a minute but I caught it got a another effect.

This will be sure to attract the anime crowd, they love cat girls.

Would this be called a tribe? A gaggle? Who knows.

During my aimless wondering also found this.

It looks kind of like a door, let's enter it.

Looks like a simple room right? Hahaha, it's a invisble maze room.

This also happens a lot when in this room.

Anyway one annyoing invisble maze later we find a ladder up? Up to where?

Up to a place where we apprently lost 8 of our 16 bits.

Our menu now has also changed to a Famicon/NES menu.

This is what the hand effect looks like 8bit.

The nice little walk cycle we have now in 8bit.

It wouldn't be a Throw back to old Famicon games if we didn't break into the first house we found.

I see the owner must be Dr who.

That or M.C. Escher.

Because this is our first time here I'll make this simple and just take the closest door to us every time there is more then one.

Even more stares, and we spot Kind of looks like a black version of daddy eyeball from gegege no kitaro.
I'm not the only weeb here that knows what that is right?

He doesn't seem to do anything so Just more reasons to come back to this place at a later date.

Oh man all these drawers makes this basement look like a office.

I'm starting to notice a theme of Stairs and Doors here.

The vest amounts of stairs is starting to get a bit ridiculous.

Look at this cute slime thing.

Look at that bobing. We are going to be headed upwards.

Ever have that feeling where you regret making a joke, not because you think the joke was bad, but because how true the joke turns out to be?

These things about a bit of a eye sore.

They look better when they moving. Anyway this seems to be a head end let's head back to that white slime thing.

Makes ya wonder whats inside the drawers. Paper work? Nothing? All the yume nikki fan games maybes.

These ones must be full of the Ao oni OCs.

Little mushrooms.

Maybe it's full of these guys. They are standing infront of yet more drawers.

Pyamids, A demon? and mushrooms. This dungeon just full of surprises.

This Demon is how we get the Demon effect.

Check that out we turn into Oni. Thankfully Not a Blue Demon.

These stairs are starting to give me a headache.

Let's now explore the left.

Well atleast it's going up.

This room really does remind me of the Escher painting.

Oh? A dead end? Well I think this makes for a good stopping point for this update.

Congrats on finding your first effects! You also got to the wonderful FC world, and explored the Snow world, which leads to one of my favorite areas in the game. Try looking around a bit more. Also the tall bird lady is a Torinigen, or bird-human.

As for options: I'd check out the robot door.

I love the maroon hue to this game and (like I’ve said before) the tribal (Aztec?) motif, it lends Yume Nikki a unique flavour instead of just being ‘generic’ unsettling with eyeballs and knives. And the music is absolutely kino.

I remember the creator of Lcddem wanted to erase all trace of it and banned people from making content about his game but, without shitting on his wishes myself, I think that’s totally unreasonable. If people want to make an LP about it then I think they should be able to.

Thats what you are talking about.

I disagree with the wishes of the creator that it should forgotten. Nobody seems to know why he wanted to nuke it from orbit, I feel it shouldn't be shoved away, people should enjoy it for what it is. That is the point of games to give other people joy, and other emotions.

There's a font fix for rpg maker 2000/3 games out there somewhere if you ever want to fix the in game text running together, but it's not like Yume Nikki is dialogue heavy so it doesn't really matter.

Epsiode 3: One of the few things I remember about this game.

Let's start this off by showing what pressing 1 does with out any effects on.

She just sits. Could likely be used to make a nice screenshot. Something to note, she will always face right (her left) when you try to sit while facing downward. She will always sit left(Her right) when you try to sit looking upwards.

You can use the cat effect to lure NPCs towards you. If you do it to a female would that be cat calling?

I like this one the most. I tried the Demon effect but nothing happen so no gif of it.

Anyway back to the snow world. @A single cheeto said we missed some stuff here.

This igloo not the same as the other ones.

Has some kind of pink pool inside.

Look at it sparkle and move a bit.

But thats not all.

I also found this women just wandering about around when I found that igloo.

Hard to tell at first what this one does, but after putting it on at a later point. It passively makes it snow.
For any non weebs here. A Yuki Onna means "Snow women". It's a Yokai.
Anyway let's go interact with the pink pool.

I don't hate the music but it got on my nerves after hearing it for a long time.

We can only follow this path. It loops around a bit.

We find a random balloon.

It teleports us to the water. I hate the water.You can barely see it in that gif but it makes you very slow.

It makes the theme of the pinksea very grateing after a while.

While exploreing around we find these no way to interact with them as they on land and we are in the water.

Oh I apparently looped around the map or something because we back at the balloon that teleported us.

A short hop and a skip upwards and to the right we find some place new.

Can't do anything so I keep wondering around.

Find a balloon in the middle of the sea. It's just here.

It teleports us here. Nice.

Oh a cave. The dulled colors are nice touch.

At the top of this place is also big cones. Nothing else of intrest here so let's check out the cave.

Oh. OH I know this room, this is one of the few things I can recall from all those years ago. I wont name drop or spoil what I mean by that unless it happens. I'll give it one try right now.

(Heads up it's pretty loud music).

I do switch the light off just once, the rare event doesn't happen. But switching the light off does also change the music.

I like Lights off version more.

Anyway I wont try to force the event and rather let the mystery of what it could be sink in for the Unspoiled readers.

Also this is what the Cat effect does in action. It looks pretty janky here. my head canon for this janky slide is she just doing the Cha Cha slide.

The Numbers Madotsuki, what do they mean?

Exploreing around there a few little alcoves like this with the same number. No idea if there a meaning behind these.

Heres another repeating one. Also those repeating eights.

Wonder how we get in there and what that word, and or symbol means.

Here's another one of those circle guys. He was pretty shy when I took the screenshot.

This is when I remembered what the Cat effect does. Look at that face he makes.

I use the cat to move the green guy out of the way. Let's see whats inside.

Kind of sad the ones that are moving down there ruined them all being in sync.

This is when I noticed the background that scrolls across the floor might have been a map of this whole world. Thats neat.

Who are all these people in the beds under the cover.

Judgeing by how we have a Bird human here, It would make sense to assume all the beds that are taken have a bird human in it.

This bed we can enter.

Just seems to be a normal bed like that one in the snow world.

You can also open those dressers doesn't seem to be anything inside them.

Uh thats abnormal. First time I've seen a bleeding wall.

What the hell? The Bird humans chase me and catch me while I tring to get more then just this screen cap.

Well this makes a good end point for this update.

I think I might try to keep with smaller updates like this. What do you guys think?

Bits of it feel that way. But if you want a game that a real Acid trip feeling to it look up. LSD the dream emulator for the Ps1. I remember seeing videos of that game around the same time I first learned about Yume Nikki Over ten years ago.

LSD Dream Emulator can be fun at times, but they Gray Man in that game scared the shit out of me when I first played it. Sorry to get off topic about the thread.

Back on track, though. @ChucklesTheJester there are two types of bird humans, as you've seen at this point. The normal ones, and the lunatic ones. The normal ones are fine, while the lunatic ones will chase you and corner you into an inescapable area if they catch you. Usually you'd have to wake up, but since you have the hand effect from the Eyeball world you can use that to escape to the Nexus. Just thought you'd like to know.

Epsiode 4: Exploreing number world some more.

Let's start with going back to this place. We never did get a good look around in there.

Inside I spotted a guillotine with a face. Happen to screen shot it at the perfect time. It looks like it's has a smile.

This is how it looks in action. Let's let out our inner french revolutionary and interact with it.

Should have expected it give us something like this. It's what it is built for.

After getting that effect I got caught trying to make it to a drawer there.

Let's use the hand and check out our new effect in the nexus.

If this was any other RPG maker Horror-ish game we would be a enemy. Then again maybe I am just a headcase for thinking it was a good idea to interact with a guillotine that moves on it's own.

Let's go to the right as I know I didn't explore much that way.

Does anyone knows if any of the random numbers sprewn about means anything?

There is this odd door with zeros and ones. Looks like binary.

Let's me run this into a translator and see if anything pops up.

I don't have japanses installed on my computer so I have no idea if it translates to words.

Inside the door we find a place that looks like the first world we went to but with more lamps.

A lot more lamps, and these don't turn on or off they always seem to be static off, or static on.

There also a wall for the numbers world here.

Following it down and there is a door.

It leads us to water? Oil? It looks like oil, and given the door to this world in the nexus looks like a robot I am going to stick with that.

We can't enter the water so back we go.

Next I found a lamp that walks.

Check out the double slide I got it to do.

Oh we getting a lamp wonder if she going to hold it or something.

Of couse not that would be too normal. In dreams You can be anything. Pressing the action key makes it turn on or off.

So more looking around and I found the door we came in from.

If there anything intresting I missed around that sub area or in number world, or really any area we have been to. It's fine hint at it.

These numbers always made me think that they belong on a musical scale.

Also found another area that connect to the oily water.

This thing reminds me of something, can't quite put my finger on it, but that thing is normally colored red.

Also look at it shuffle about.

A hallway full of eights. We saw what was to the left of this hallway last update it was the door being blocked.

I didn't seem to find much else so i'll hop back to the nexus.

So what door should I open next? I would also love to hear what you guys think anything we have seen so far even means.

The Cat effect can be used on that oil/water for a friend to appear, though you have to be a little patient.

And now that you have the Lamp effect, you can go to the Dark World in the Nexus. Clockwise it would be the 9th world. Before all that though, I'd suggest the 6th door, because it has an extremely useful effect.
