‘Titans’ Star Anna Diop Disables Instagram Comments

By JENNA ANDERSON - July 22, 2018

The first trailer for Titans brought its cast into the spotlight this week, and it looks like that has had some major effects.

Anna Diop, who is set to play Koriand'r/Starfire on the DC Universe series, recently disabled comments on the vast majority of her Instagram posts. Her Instagram, which you can check out here, features only six photos that have been posted since May 11th. The latest post, where Diop announces that she has a role in Jordan Peele's Us, is the only one that currently allows comments.

While it's unknown exactly why Diop essentially cleaned house on her Instagram, some have speculated that it is due to the negative backlash from the first Titans trailer. The trailer, which debuted on Thursday, features several brief glimpses of Starfire using her powers, which have appeared to only continue the racist and sexist remarks surrounding Diop's casting.

Earlier this year, a series of leaked set photos provided the first look at Diop and her co-stars in costume, which earned backlash for not being "comic accurate". At the time, Diop actually used Instagram to fire back at the negativity, posting a passionate response to her followers.

"For the sake of our incredible fans - I hated that this is the first picture people are seeing." Diop said back in April. "It's out of context and it's a misrepresentation of the incredible character I get to play. And also a misrepresentation of the phenomenal production behind it all. With that said, the hate speech that followed was deplorable. And though I am highly unbothered, I do want to use this as an opportunity to say that tearing people down is not something that I tolerate. For myself or anyone else."

"Too often social media is abused by some who find refuge in the anonymity and detachment it provides: misused as a tool to harass, abuse, and spew hatred at others." Diop continued. "This is weak, sad, and a direct reflection of the abuser. Racist, derogatory, and/or cruel comments have nothing to do with the person on the receiving end of that abuse. And because I know this - I'm unfazed. But for anyone out there who may not - I am here to remind you that whatever ugly and negative thing anyone ever choose to say about you is always a reflection and revelation of themselves - it does NOT define you, and it certainly does NOT make you any less perfect than you are."

Regardless of the motivation behind her Instagram changes, fans have taken the time to rally behind Diop, sharing various positive messages and generall goodwill on social media.

Do you think that Diop changed her Instagram because of "fan" negativity? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Titans will debut sometime this fall on DC Universe.

That trailer is a doozy.

That Starfire casting was an atrocious decision. What is with DC recasting almost all of their red headed characters as either black people or brunettes in their movies and TV shows? Jimmy Olsen, Iris West, Starfire, etc. They should have cast a pretty red headed white girl to remain true to the character, and to save the makeup department some effort.

Marvel gets it right. They cast and write true to the source and the characters. It would be like if they cast Scarlet Witch as some ugly black woman for diversity sake. DC keeps fucking with their own characters and getting them wrong, then wondering why everyone hates their product. Why has no exec bothered to look at what Marvel is doing, and suggest "hey.... maybe we should cast actors that look like our characters, and then write them how they are in the comics. You know, give fans what they expect, rather than a neck-breaking Robin and a big monkey Starfire?".

"guys, I have an idea"

"let's take the character who comes from a far away land, who's first introduction was breaking out of prison and causing trouble, along with her not understanding anything without it being explicitly explained and being primitive, and make her black"

And part of her backstory is that she's a former slave.

EDIT: Ninja'd, sorry.

I don’t mind Starfire being black as long as they get the look and personality of the character.

But that hair and outfit...

Several really good Starfire cosplayers have been posted in this thread, and several of them were black, Latina, whatever kind of POC and nobody had a word of objection because they looked like Starfire.

Nobody objects to an attractive black lady being cast as Starfire. The problem is that she looks like a fat tranny with a red mop on her head. DC, your own fans are doing better with your IP than you can manage!

This is like me kicking the ever loving shit out of LeBron James in a 1 on 1 game. It's pathetic.

Looking at the OP photo of the TV show's Starfire costume...

Not only do they make a very pretty actress look hideous, she's standing directly in front of another, much taller actor wearing what looks like black tactical armor. She's wearing dark leggings, and they are positioned right in front of the actor in armor. So just glancing at it, it looks like the bulky, booted legs of the (SWAT trooper?) have been grafted onto her. I first saw this same picture on my phone and could not figure out what was wrong with her legs.

I found another promo pic and the special effects make her look worse. Of course, they're still playing the race card when these effects would look equally bad on a white woman.
