Over the last few months and especially over the last week I've seen a lot of content creators discussing their use of a website called Locals. It is a subscription service started by Dave Rubin of all people that is apparently where a lot of these people put more detailed content and things they don't think they can put on sites like YouTube. I see many comparisons to Patreon. This website doesn't seem like the kind of thing I'd use or pay for when it comes to most internet personalities. However a few of the people I watch seem reasonably intelligent and make good content; and they also have pages on Locals.

Have any of you used Locals? Is it actually decent? And is it worth the money? Or is it just another nexus of grift?

Just checked it out, this is a cookie cutter "capitalize on the trend" type of venture. It probably won't last, but if it does it's only because someone with the desire to innovate comes into the picture. Similar to gab, the blaze, parler, bitchute, nra tv, etc... These "with a twist" clone sites don't have the potential to bring in serious followings or income like their competitors, their only hope is a merger or selling for a meager return.

I decided to pay five bucks a month to get access to the VivaBarnes Law page on Locals. Overall I am pretty happy with what I've gotten. The community is way more active than I expected with new posts every few minutes and the user-submitted content is of good quality. A lot of the posts have ended up being really interesting and that isn't even getting into the stuff that the actual creators are posting. I'm guess it will be very dependent on who you subscribe in terms of the quality of your experience. But at least for me I've gotten access to a ton of really neat and informative videos, articles and discussion so I'd say it was worth it. It feels really old fashioned if that's an appropriate descriptor. And I mean that in a good way. It's like being on a good forum before all sorts of gay bullshit invaded and ruined everything.

Pleasantly surprised it wasn't a shitshow. We'll see if that persists. For now it looks good.

how does it compare to Patreon? Is it like a 1-1 but with more social/forum integration?

It is hard to tell if my experience is better because the creators themselves are more mature or if the community at large is simply better. The payment scheme is pretty much what you'd expect from Patreon, minus the tiers (at least as far as I've seen). The community focus seems to be more front and center I guess because the site itself is acting as a platform and not just a means of paying people that produce content on other platforms. I appreciate that they can discuss whatever they want and are not worried about some random banhammer coming down out of nowhere to fuck them up.

At this specific moment in time the service/platform that Locals is offering seems pretty great. It feels less spastic compared to something like Patreon. There are still memes and jokes but the whole community aspect of it (at least the one I have supported and the others I have joined but not supported) seems like there is a lot more effort. It's not a bunch of drawfags and Skeptics™ popping off and being weirdos.

With your account you can view and participate in pretty much any community. But the community owners are able to gate content off for their supporters. And then on the front end you can view a news feed that collects various posts from your subscribed communities, which can be sorted by popularity, relevancy, et. cetera. Pretty straightforward stuff.
