Titan Quest anniversary is my favorite atm. I spent a bit of time in their other game too, Grim Dawn. Both are available to pirate so you can see if they are for you before buying it.
Titan Quest takes place in the age of Greek Myth, and Grim Dawn is a kind of dark fantasty grungy apocalypse. I really liked both.

I think I've got Grim Dawn. I've got over three hundred games so far, so it's a bit hard to keep track.

do you want a singleplayer game to play through once and be done with? play grim dawn
do you want a game with multiplayer economy and huge endgame that you can play for a thousand hours? play path of exile (warning: only fun if you're sufficiently autistic)

Diablo Belzebub : a mod for diablo 1 that "modernize" the original game and has hundred of hours of content.

Diablo 2 MedianXL: Diablo 2 mod that modernize and adds content, quests, loot, enemies and a new gameplay leveling system.

Either one or both?
I'll go with MedianXL because is tested, stable and change the game enough as to feel it new and refreshing.

Project D2 is great but is just a graphical reskin of the original. It has some more belts and whistles like the shared containers and some more accesible drop loot table so you don't have to farm too much.

I don't think D2 changed classes skills or item drops significantly as MedianXL does.

Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance 1 and 2 are both great hack n slash dungeon crawler games, but you’ll need an emulator or an Xbox/PS2/GameCube to play them because they never came out on PC. There’s a third game coming out later this year which is getting released on PC but they dropped the Baldur’s Gate subtitle so now it’s just called Dark Alliance.

There’s a franchise called The Bard’s Tale that’s made on the same engine as the Dark Alliance games and is basically a tongue in cheek parody of them with similar gameplay. I haven’t played it yet but I’ve heard good things about it and you can get the remasters of the first 3 games on Steam all in one go in for like a tenner. There’s a 4th one but that one still costs like £30 when it’s not on sale since it only came out a couple years ago and is a whole new game and not a remaster.

I went from Torchlight 1, to 2, to Diablo 3 myself. Despite the hate D3 gets, for a novice ARPG player who didn't grow up with D2, it's great. If you can get it relatively cheap, it's a no-brainer ($20 for the base + Reaper of Souls which is just straight up required for D3. Skip the Necromancer DLC, at least to start, it's mediocre imo.) . I've sunk around 3,000 hours into it.

Outside of that, Grim Dawn is fantastic, although I'm not a fan of stories in ARPG's that require decision making that drastically effect you in the long run. I had to tab out of GD too many times to know what this or that meant, and which decision to make that'll effect my character in the end game.

Path of Exile of course, but it's a bit complex, especially if you're new. But there's fun to be had without a doubt. Allot of it. Beware though, it's a freemium game.

Median XL if you want a more traditional ARPG experience, and really want to play Diablo 2.

Those are just a few though, and good entry points. One thing to keep in mind too, is that you're probably bound to end up playing one game way more than any other. ARPG games like these are hard to split up time between. And so you'll become bias towards certain game mechanics. I can play other games but my mind always ends up coming back to how D3 or PoE does x better than it's done in this other game. Not a bad thing though, it's just not a genre where you can sample something and get a feel for it then move on. They are time sinks after all.

Fallout or Underrail.
Hear me out.
The first one and second has dungeon exploration elements you might like.

Bard's Tale. My negro acquaintance!! Those are some silly, very good 6/10 games and that is not an insult.

Also Grim Dawn.

Gotta echo Grim Dawn and Titan Quest Anniversary Edition. Both are fantastic

Sacred and Sacred 2 aren’t bad either. Get the community patch for Sacred 2 though if you decide on that

Median XL Sigma is one of, if not the best Diablo 2 mods and definitely worth a look

A lot of people are big on Grim Dawn. Personally I really want to like it, as it has some pretty great atmosphere, art direction, and I actually like that they put at least half an ass into the writing. I just can't figure out how to make it fun to play. Most skills lack any sort of kinetic impact and I only ever found myself using a couple of them, leading to very monotonous combat. Maybe it's my fault for not experimenting enough, but my experience for the one time I managed to get through the entire game and first expansion was auto attacking.
