Liberalism is equated with weakness by conservatives, and rightfully so! Within this dualistic universe of existence and non-existence, violence holds far more gravitas than peace, thus it is understandable to feel afraid, and a need to protect ourselves. Guns, massive military budgets, citizen surveillance, and the erosion of American rights, these are all items supported due to an underlying fear of non existance.
It is only when we overcome our fear and paranoia that we may see ourselves and others with sympathy and work to create a better world for all as apposed to being a survivor.
