This was pretty similar to Mao's Hundred Flowers campaign, a win-win political trap for government opponents. Get asked if you have any criticism of the Chinese Communist Party. Answer no, they use it as proof no one has any problems with the party so Mao's right. Answer yes, they use it as proof of treason in the country to strengthen Mao's position, and you also get a visit and a beating, imprisonment, or very rarely just straight up killed by the CPC secret police, along with your social/professional life being ruined if you don't take back your statement.

Here, get asked if you have any criticism of race relations in the US as a white person. Answer no, media uses it as proof that no one showed up and so no one actually thinks there's anything wrong with how whites are treated in race relations issues. Answer yes, media uses it as proof that there's super dangerous Nazi rebels in the country so the government needs to strengthen his position, and you also get doxed and run a high risk of having your social/professional life ruined if you don't take back your statement.
