Mario Party is one of nintendo’s Successful Mario spin-offs. Although it’s been in a state of decline in fun from the past few years, it’s still fun regardless.

Up to 4 players can play and are taken to a random board where you have to collect 20 coins to get a star. Each board has its own theme and gimmick. At the end of each turn you all go to a mini game. Winner gets coins. The player with the most stars at the end, including bonus stars, wins the game.

Mario Party 2 is my favorite of the series. It was the most colorful of all the Mario Party games I played. And it had the best mini games in the series.

My friends and I used to marathon the long-ass games over weekends when I was a kid. Good times. The first one is my favorite because of the added competition involved in comparing our palm blisters. Nintendo pussed out and did away with that for the sequel.

Mario Party remains a great game for casual hang-outs and gatherings.

What are your favorite installments in the series? Mario Party 2, 4, and 5 remain my favorites.
I loved 2 for the boards, 4 for the minigames, and 5 for the extra features.

I haven't played much of the recent installments (9 or 10), but they apparently streamlined the gameplay in order to try and change it up according to people who played it, which is a shame. I haven't played them myself, so maybe it could still be fun.

Mario Party got the name right; it’s only fun when you have like 6 people fighting for the controllers

Fights used to break out in the basement of my friends house while playing Mario Party 2.

Now it's way more fun and funnier to play it drunk with adults or watch sites like giantbomb play through a 50 turn game which can take like 5 hours.

People point out and ask why the first Mario Party gets no love and no rereleases, and the answer is simple.

Its those wretched "Rotate the analog stick" games. They were such a horrible and terrible idea. It was supposed to be you use your thumb to do the rotating but most players discovered using your palm was better, but this lead to injuring your skin, etc.

It isn't necessarily a problem, but the worst of all was the Tug-of-War game.

Despite the analog stick mini games, the original Mario Party still holds a special place in my heart.

I seem to have the most fond memories of either three or the one with the sun and moon gimmick.

2 is my favorite, though 8 has a special place in my heart. I hope costumes get brought back one day.

I kicked ass with the first Mario Party ever since I was a kid. I almost fucked up my hand, but I got so good at it, I just couldn't give a shit and I might've developed a callus from it. I have so many favorite mini games from it I used to butt heads with my brothers a lot over, but if I had a gun put to my head, I'd have to say "Teetering Towers" was my favorite, if only because there was just something so fucking hilarious about missing your jump and falling into an abyss. I keep laughing my ass off every single time to this day. (Doesn't help that for some reason, now the jump mechanic's not responding with that game very well.)

One of my favorite memories is when on the DK's Jungle Adventure board, a brother got a Warp Block and switched with his twin (who was I believe about to get the Star). He was next to take his turn, and he got a Warp Block and switched places again with his twin. They were at each others' throats over it and it was amazing.

Since earlier this year, my brothers and I decided to try and collect the games we never owned starting with the 64 games, but each and every time we played through it, the one would whine "The first was better", his excuse being the mini games were just more fun in the first game. In some ways, yeah, I can understand, but I will argue the second game was really frigging good with amazing board game designs and improved on many beloved mini games, and it wasn't a bad idea to bring in the mic for the GameCube versions even if it only really worked half the time. The items I'm still on the fence about, but I'm thinking they're a bit too broken for their own good. The Magic Lamp item was basically a freebie and should've been a rare item from the start.

Now have a relevant comic.

Though the game has a reputation as a friendship destroyer, Mario Party actually was a bonding game for me and my little brother back in high school. I think both of us were competitive in the same way, where bad RNG is just funny, while losing due to a lack of skill is actually more upsetting. And one of us winning was better than the AI winning, so we'd mostly just beat up on them.

We'd always play against Wario and Yoshi. We had this in-joke of Yoshi being as complete sociopath behind his dead creepy eyes. I swear sometimes he'd just fuck himself over in order take take one of us down with him, lol.

6 was always my favorite, which doesn't seem to get much love that I see. The board objectives were really varied and fun.

Same, my relationship with my brothers practically thrived on games like Mario Party and Smash Brothers, although it became more of a bonding game when we got older. I think it helped that we stopped taking it seriously and being sore losers (though if we were to gain up on someone, that irritation starts to come back for being "unfair").

That is amazing.

Got a strange question, but what was it about Peach in the first Mario Party that was so bad? I always played as Peach, so I never got to see if she was as much of a nightmare of an AI like people are claiming.

I had 3, 4, and 7 as a kid and rented the others a few times. Don't have them anymore though. Me and a few friends actually do a weekly thing where we get really drunk and play video games so I keep meaning to buy a Mario Party but I'm not sure which one. I remember 5 and 6 being really fun because you could transform spaces into traps so maybe one of those.

Also
Have you guys played Sonic Shuffle? I have it and its a special kind of hell.

Me, my sister and our mutual best friend always had such a blast at her house with Mario Party 2. Always set it for 50 minutes, and by the time we have mid-play food we'd make messes all over the ground, and laugh at ourselves, finding a giant turkey fall out of the freezer, and discovering turtle meat (and yes it is illegal, okay?) in the microwave. Good times :)

All of the newer Mario Party games are inferior I don't understand why Nintendo does what it does. And before you say it, NDCube is a wholly owned subsidiary. So no, it is Nintendo fucking up.

The stupid decisions in Mario Party are almost as bad as the stupid decisions in Star Fox games. The minigames are still alright. The boards you play on are trash anymore.

Not just that, you would wear out your analog stick. Who at Nintendo thought it was a good idea?

Mario Party 8, horrible presentation, cheap games and waggle fest.
