Mary Poppins Returns (or Disney's Middle Finger to P.L. Travers -

I'm not going to lie, this looks pretty bad. The sets look straight out of that crappy Live Action Cat in the Hat, the acting from the children is weak and the whimsy is on par with Hook. None of the trailers I've seen make this look magical and everyone looks constipated

:autism::powerlevel:I should also point out that Disney making this film is thumbing their nose at the wishes P.L. Travers who did not want Disney making sequels to the original film because she was rightfully infuriated at how awful Disney made the first film (And yes I know P.L. Travers wasn't that nice of a person. I'm sorry but Not every author can be as nice as J.R.R. Tolkein.) I had hoped the same because as a kid I was constantly ragged on for my family and I hating Mary Poppins (I hated it because it wasn't like the book and my family hated it because they found Dick van Dyke's Bert to be very insulting.

Never really cared for Mary Poppins after watching it the first time, was more of a Bedknobs and Broomsticks person.

Regardless, I hope this one flops because of all the Disney fuckery. If anyone's seen "Saving Mr. Banks", it's basically Disney's historical revisionism of their time with P.L. Travers, making it look like she eventually approved of their version when really she loathed it.

mary poppins herself in this trailer is utterly unbearable. the other two seemed able to emote a bit. dumb kid actors will always be dumb kid actors. i'm really not sure what audience this is supposed to appeal to.

the original movie may be crap narratively but i think most people just remember the songs and julie andrews anyway. dick van dyke has gotten shit for that accent for the rest of his life.

I love the original Mary Poppins. It's in my top 3 most favorite Disney movies of all time. The very existence of this "soft reboot" offends me on every level. And while I like Emily Blunt most of the time, that clip was not at all flattering for her. Yikes.

I'm sick to death of these live action remakes. This is worse than the direct-to-video sequel era of Disney. Why? Because everyone knew the direct-to-video sequels were absolute shit. I find myself being alone in thinking that these remakes are hot garbage; a lot of people love them, and I don't get it.

The Disney remakes are by far some of the laziest stuff they’ve done. At least with the sequels, new things were tried but kept in the same format as the original. The live-action adaptations of Disney animation have bothered me the most since some of them have to make it more “woke” like in Maleificent and Beauty and the Beast.

Disney, over the past five years or so, has been obsessive about being very "self-aware" and "meta." It started with Frozen (which is a movie that I still REALLY love, to be honest). People can say all they want about Frozen being some kind of anti-man or pro-feminism propaganda movie, but for me, the message of the importance of family shines through the most ... Which is something that's really nice-- especially for little kids watching the movie, who may have had a recent fight with their sibling or something, haha. Sure, Anna gets lectured about how she shouldn't marry someone after knowing them for a day ... But they reel that back quite a bit by making Kristoff falling in love with her by the end of the movie, so ... It really isn't THAT "woke" of a movie for me.

Ever since Frozen, it's been nonstop "wokeness" for Disney. Being so meta just kills the magic. A lot of Disney movies these days just feel ... Magic-less. Plots become convoluted, the movies overexplain everything, etc. It's awful.

The Maleficent movie and the Beauty and The Beast remake are the worst culprits of this so far. Those movies are unbearable to sit through.

Nigga, please - I refuse to give any of this live-action garbage the time of day. I don't want to sully my eyes on such pathetic excuses for cash grabs. And this ain't no different...

Out of the Disney remakes, I liked Pete's Dragon and Christopher Robin because they told generally original stories while putting their own unique spin on it. With this, Disney's trying to blatantly copy past successes while going for the "Grandma" and "Lin-Manuel Miranda fan" markets.

Everybody on /r/boxoffice thinks it is going to do well, maybe even outgross Aquaman.

It is also the reason Solo: A Star Wars Story was forced to stick with the Memorial Day release and not get switched to December as LucasFilm wanted. Meaning if this does bomb it will arguably account for not one but two House of Mouse bombs in 2018.

I haven't seen the Pete's Dragon remake ... But I have heard good things about it. While I loved Pete's Dragon as a kid, it is definitely one of the most dopey and cheesy Disney movies ever (and that's saying something! haha). That's a movie that actually warranted an update, I'd say.

I thought that the Christopher Robin movie was delightful. It was a classy movie. It didn't try to regurgitate previous Pooh stories. Instead they made the movie a period piece and also a nostalgia movie for the adults that grew up with Pooh (but a nostalgia movie in a GOOD way). I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it.
