nah, you could have had a different crew in each game and it would have been fine. what the real problem was, and the problem made both mass effect 1 AND 2 pointless, was that nothing you did mattered. not just the stupid shit everyone complains about, but the main plots added nothing.
you literally have a real life reaper attack the political capital in the first game, and in the second game nobody cares. nobody believes in reapers, nobody is preparing for an invasion. hell its so pointless that you have to go around reunifying all the council races at the start of the third damn game.
mass effect 2 is meaningless in the grand scheme of the things, but at least it kind of makes sense with how it was presented. you were basically on a black ops job that nobody was ever going to know about. and honestly complaining that the crew wasn't brought over wasn't a problem with the game it was a problem with lazy writers. there was literally nothing stopping them from bringing the crew back together, especially since...you know, they pretty much still showed up if they survived. the idea they couldn't make them playable because "what if everyone died!?" is really a stupid excuse because who honestly carried over a save where everyone fucking died without trying to do that shit? And even then, you could have just had been forced to only use the vermire survivor and liara if you were that dumb. You practically still have that if you let Garrus and Tali die anyways.
you could start the series at 3, and you're missing almost nothing. its the exact same fucking state the galaxy was in at the start of 1. humanity doesnt even seem to have much political influence despite what they say happened in ME1.
In Dragon Age: Origins, a much better game than the Mass Effect series imo, you could fuck the bisexual elf twink Zevran, who had a developed storyline and was generally an interesting character. Am I the only one who remembers this shit? What do they want, a genderless alien sticking its proboscis into a tranny's stink ditch?
I heard that originally they were planning for you to be able to import a ME2 save where Shepard dies on the suicide mission and you would play through the game as Vega instead of Shepard, but it was scrapped. As it stands with the ME2 crew, if the plot relevant ones die they have emergency stand-ins, usually minor characters you have already met. The only real interesting one is Padok Wiks, the stand-in for Mordin if he dies. In the end only Tali and Garrus really make a tangible difference as they are squadmates in 3.
Y'know that's actually a pretty neat idea, though it'd probably open up a whole can of worms that I doubt the writers wanted to tackle. Where do you go once the big hero of the series dies and someone else has to pick up the pieces? Imagine trying to play the diplomat when you're some nobody marine when they'd probably listen to Commander Shepard. There's a lot of potential in that idea, but considering how much of a shitshow Mass Effect 3's development was, how the game ultimately turned out, there's not a chance in hell they could have pulled it off with any sort of finesse.

Even the final decision in ME1 is ignored in ME2. It doesn't matter if you pick Anderson over Udina, he ends up quitting anyway because the writers wanted you to choose Udina.

Same as the Rachni Queen. If you killed her in ME1, the Reapers have created a clone in ME3.
Fuck Udina. Guy's an asshole, and one of the best parts of ME2 is Councilor Anderson telling him to fuck off back to his own offices.
The final decision in ME1 doesn't even carry over into 2. You are asked again who you picked for the council near the start of the game and that is the choice that counts.

Maybe they're conflating the initial conversation with Jack as a romance option when you go down to her hidey hole on the ship, where you can fuck her just to fuck her but you lock out any real romance option later on.

I mean, we had a virus escape from a chink lab to cause a worldwide pandemic and not one year later governments that matter are all ignoring it to instead use the wu-flu as a political weapon or opportunity to grow their power structures so ME2 wasn't that far off in it's depiction of the galaxy ignoring an attack on the Citadel.

I'm not sure if I should laugh or cry at that revelation. Everyone did exactly that in response to the threat. "Nope, nothing to worry about, Saren is dead and so is Sovereign. No more impending galactic doom and we can all go about our lives and maintain the status quo."
Remember how you found the space-equivalent of Atlantis two years ago, along with the math to calculate where it'll always be drifting from here on out? Codex entries point-out that Ilos is considered THE Prothean holy grail of discovery, and Liara has dedicated most of her current life to analyzing the crumbs that imply it MIGHT exist, and the entire last chunk of the game is a feverish race trying to find it before Saren does something shitty. Shep almost immediately asks why the fuck nobody's mentioning this adventure and any of it's ramifications when you reunite with everyone on the Citadel, and this one and only response about Ilos is essentially what that Salarian bitch barfs at you:
"lol there was nothing on Ilos and Vigil was broken, haha what's a Conduit?"

Shit, talking about the Conduit just reminded me of the single biggest revelation on Ilos: that the Protheans piggybacked on Mass Effect and the relays, and that the relays were unequivocally a creation that predated the Protheans. At least I would hope they'd recognize that relay. Speaking of stuff... Talking about that has just made me go look for a neat little vid that's quite relevant to the theme we're discussing:
