This is why the "glow op" theories might have weight. You take a self admitted 18 year old, who admits that they saw the Christchurch shooting (3 years ago, so this guy was 15) and was drawn to it, and you can take this very young, very impressionable and very stupid kid, and over 3 years push him to do things which make perfect sense to him, even though they are completely counter intuitive to what he actually wants to do.

The brilliance of this is that this can be as easily explained by the guy being a complete retard who made all those leaps himself. Both are quite plausible. Probably a mix of both.
