And why are they always animals that are seen as powerful or cute, like wolves, tigers, dragons, foxes, or kitty cats? You'd think that if people REALLY felt like animals on the inside you would get a few of them who think they're animals that are not considered cool/powerful/cute. Where are the retards who think they're warthogs (not the warplane), proboscis monkeys, blobfish, or elephant seals? If this is a real thing then logic dictates that there should be people out there who identify as ugly and uncool animals, right?
I genuinely feel bad for the parents of these freaks. Someone should, since their damn kids aren't going to. They never stop to think about the sense of shame and embarrassment their parents feel over their child behaving like this. I mean, I know people with Autism are incapable of feeling empathy or seeing things from the perspective of others, but still. Especially if they're only children without siblings. Imagine being a parent, trying to raise your only child as best you can, give them the best life you're able to, and only wanting the best for them. Then one day in high school they come up to you and say they've got something to tell you. You brace yourself, imagining them coming out as gay to you or something. This is actually a very valid question and as someone from inside both the mentioned categories I am going to give you an honest answer. A lot of folks that end up being furries, otherkin, trans, nonbinary or other catagories that are not typically deemed to be normal society is because part of autism is realizing you’re different and not knowing how to NOT be different. You have a rather rough time making sense of your own reality and you tend to be very attached to your favorite kinds of media to cope with that. I and many others grew up very attached to animal related childrens movies- Disney films especially. So statistically? You’re right. Many of us are also autistic because we feel accepted by each other.
On the otherkin animal question, the otherkin community is actually surprisingly very full of gatekeeping and the therians [otherkin specific to the category of ‘terrestrial animals’] are very prominent. Often being those cooler animals because they deem them to be the only valid types- especially in the roots of the old guard [I’m gonna call em what they are. Therian boomers.] There are lots of otherkin that identify as less popular animals. I have met personally a bonobo, bugs, dolphins- they aren’t actually that unheard of.
That said, I am not here to defend the actions discussed in this thread, just to add some insider insight. You are free to disregard what I have said if you so choose to.
