I feel like I'm kinda honestly in the middle when it comes to MatPat.

On the one hand, it's really obvious that he's passionate about his work and I won't lie, I find some of his videos interesting. On the other hand, many of his theories are pants on head retarded and he can get quite full of himself. You just gotta take it all at face value. They're just crack pot theories about video games, come on. Some folks get way too far up MatPat's ass. Like bro it's not that serious.

Giving Undertale to the Pope though was really, really dumb. Holy shit.

Anyone who take his videos seriously is a fool. The theories are stupid and insane. I think that he know that that they are ludacris, and just doing it for fun. At least, I hope so.

The problem is MatPat himself takes his videos seriously. Sure he peppers in some "I am really bad at puns therefore it is funny" lines, but that doesn't excuse the fact that he approaches everything else in a serious tone, as if he 100% believed the words that were coming out of his mouth.

My main question is: Why the fuck did Pope Francis choose to meet with this dude in the first place?

It wasn't just him, but I wonder myself how someone who became famous through crackpot video game theories was invited by the Pope.

Personally I don't think MatPat's a cow. I don't think he's a bad person either tbh, I think he just lets his fame get the better of him more often than not. That being said the "Sending the Pope Undertale" thing is super cringy and retarded.

I've never actually watched any of his videos, because on principle I think they're kinda lame and I'd rather watch DYKGaming to get some actual info rather than the latest CRAAAZY THEORIES of Reddit/tumblr.

There was one video I've found especially funny tho, tho I've never watched it. It's called "Is Earthbound Actually Really Dark?" and it's hilarious because any fan could tell you that's the basic premise of the series: a cutesy, cartoony exterior w/ simple/happy beginnings, slowing devolving to reveal darker and more serious themes. Knowing MatPat tho he probably completely misses the mark.

MatPat's older videos had a lot more work put into them. He had a genuine passion for making these videos, and they were actually not that bad either, because they weren't littered with FNAF, Undertale, and bad puns. A long time ago, MatPat realized the potential of his following (This was when he had between 1-2,000,000 subscribers) and decided that he wanted to make a lot of money, so his videos became the lowest common denominator for video game discussion.

He's also got a new show on YouTube RED.

I think matpat is an arrogant asshole but i don't think he is a lolcow perse. I've been an avid follower of his even through i think his post fnaf content is mostly garbage. My opinion on him:

Egocentric: After his rise in popularity, everything became more "about him" than about theories. 80% of the videos have his face photoshoped in for no reason, he reminds everyone all the time how it's HIS show, how that was HIS JOKE, how that joke he just did WAS AWESOME, etc.

He is "special": Mat for some unknown reason thinks he is some kind of "embassador of gaming culture". The way he talks in the pope video, makes him look like some messianic figure that is showing the world that videogames are changing the world for better and gamers are heroes. In reality he is just some dude on youtube who makes clickbait videos.

Hipocrisy: Matpat went to the pope to ask how to deal with haters but mat is a grauitous asshole in ALL of his videos. For absolutely no reason he will take jabs at series, be misogynist, etc. Any Zelda video will talk shit on skyward sword. The DOA video says that "woman are worst than men because decades of cience says so" (shows no source at all) and "Do women even play dead or alive?". Says Ace Attorney is "that series that everybody knows the meme but nobody plays", etc. He acts like a poor victim but loves to talk crap about the game he is theorizing.

Bullshit theories: He pratically "jumped the shark" after the fnaf spam, most theories he does nowarays are awful, not even in the "it's kinda silly" but in the "obviously nonsensical bullshit". "Link is dead!", "Wario is 10 feet tall!" , "Sans is Ness!", "Scott is wrong about his game!". Many of them became memes/ironic shitposts. His last theory is probably one of his worst yet:

In this video Mat says "Phoenix is a criminal because he hid the evidence!", but he fails hard because:
1- Phoenix didn't hid the evidence. The detective found it and got maya arrested. It shows right there in the video.
2- Everybody in the game hides evidence all the time. The game doesn't play by real life laws.
3- The game explains how evidence works on case 5, but none of this is mentioned so it's safe to assume MAT DIDN'T EVEN FINISH THE GAME.

But it doesn't matter because he ends the videos with " But it's just a theory! A game theory!" therefore he shields himself against any criticism and let his fans will defend him.

Sellout: Matpat makes a lot of sponsored theories but doesn't mention it. He did a theory about MMORPGs dying while promoting another mmorpg. He did a theory about master chief armor that was sponsored my microsoft etc. But the worst of all is that mat sold out to youtube red to make his new show "Game Lab". That wouldn't be so bad by itself by Matpat was salty that Jimmy Fallon had move views than him and said "youtube is about the community, you can't make youtube tv!"

And yet, he joins youtube red (supposed to be like tv) and makes a money exclusive videos, and later defends it because "you gotta support the youtube community blabla". He changed his mind for the money. He puts much more effort in his new show than his old show, he doesn't give a fuck about the community that made him popular in the first place.

summary: Matpat is an arrogant jew that makes crappy clickbait videos and somehow thinks he is a "gaming culture hero" for talking with the pope and brainwashing kids. I don't know if he pretends to be like that for views or not but i've never seen him chimpout, which is why i don't think he is a worthy cow to watch.

I was a long time fan of his as well. His content really took a turn for the worse once his minecraft video blew up, and he had a whole new audience to exploit. I think his companion cube and adventure island videos are still pretty entertaining and well researched. Even then his videos were hit and miss, like the "who killed Aerith?" theory and best boobs in gaming (really dude?) Eventually, his style of video making became so self centered and so filled with "How do you do fellow kids?" moments that I had to give up watching the guy. I guess it wasn't all in vain, seeing as he now makes way more money then he used to, for half the work. Honestly, I bet MatPat's animator works harder on those videos than he does.

Does he actually talk like this or is it just a voice he puts on for the videos? I really hope it's just the latter because holy fuck, his voice is annoying.

Also, a pet peeve of mine is when people, rather than just positing their own interpretation of something, have to outright discredit the creator and talk about how "wrong" they are and how their own interpretation is obviously the right one. It's just so arrogant to assume that the person who actually created the thing you're talking about is wrong.

It's MOSTLY his real voice. Some of the squeakier bits he puts on for dramatic effect, but after watching his GT Live mess, yes, that's his real voice.

As for the FNAF debacle, I think it was one of his earliest livestreams (he might have been playing FNAF 4 or he might have just been doing a live theory making thing) but Toby Fox actually got in the comments and started telling him he was wrong. I think the most referenced statement is that MatPat was "close, but wrong".

Overall, I just watch his vids when I need something to bore me to sleep, or I want to throw out a crackpot theory and watch people's heads explode at the stupid.
