Maximalist music - CLIPPING INTENSIFIES

  • Intermittent Denial of Service attack is causing downtime. Looks like a kiddie 5 min rental. Looking into some solutions.

There are so many minimalist trends with music, I figured it'd be a nice change of pace to make this thread! I want music that's literally bursting at the seams with sounds, music that fills the entirety of your headphones.

One of the coolest bubblegum bass musicians:

This guy is one of my favourite current producers, great glitchy R&B:

For something a bit different, I think shoegaze could apply to this, most of it sounds like a giant vortex of sound:

I'd mention "Total Eclipse of the Heart" but that would be a bit too obvious an example of a "Maximalist" rock song so here's a different Rick Steinman-composed Bonnie Tyler song, "Ravishing".

Steinman's instrumental version of "Ravishing", which actually predates the Bonnie Tyler recording, was used on the 1985 WWF (later WWE) The Wrestling Album as Hulk Hogan's theme which was then used as the epic opening music for the CBS Saturday morning cartoon Hulk Hogan's Rock 'n' Wrestling.

I could go on all night about my feelings towards this.

When it comes to rock music, I'm generally one for letting each instrument have some breathing room instead of a giant wall of sound, but I'm definitely not opposed to it if it's executed well.

And with rock music, this mentality can either go extremely well:

Or horribly wrong:

(Fun fact: Both these albums came out in 1997.)

But when it comes to electronic music, the overwhelming qualities are more forgivable because it's music that's pretty much designed to be played in large spaces, and both extremes are equally effective depending on the context.

Squarepusher's a really good example of an electronic artist who can make music where everything has room to breathe:

As well as more aggressively loud, in-your-face music:

So really, I have nothing more to say other than [Insert Rick Rubin joke here].

Repetitive, relentless, yet catchy as heck. No room for anything to breathe. Hell, even the MC, Rob Base, barely takes a breath. It’s a wall of looped samples and a lyrical onslaught. One of my favourite hip hop tracks of all time to boot.
