fm synths own and it makes me a bit angry that developers always seem to opt for crappy squarewaves when they want to evoke 'retro' instead of using crazy fm sweeps and such

FM is hard do program. Teenagers using cracked copies of FL Studio don't even touch in synths like that.

Also you already highlighted Langrisser but that entire soundtrack is awesome, killer bass and drums especially for FM synthesis which typically struggles with that.

EDIT: Also for new content this soundtrack has probably the best guitar synthesis I've heard on the Genesis

Langrisser/Warsong has some good early Genesis sound that I recommend to play just to listen.

SNES might have the RPGs but got nothing with the Genesis Shooters and their soundtracks.
