20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment have started development on a fan favorite in the video game world. Heralded as one of the most popular video game franchises in history, MEGA MAN is now on his way to the big screen. Feel free to be cautiously optimistic.

One positive sign of things to come is Chernin Entertainment. David Ready and Michael Finfer are overseeing for the company, while Peter Chernin produces. Together they have a pretty solid pedigree for sci-fi action movies, including the recent/upcoming Planet of the Apes films. Mike Ireland and Ryan Horrigan are overseeing for Fox.

Mega Man, originally called Rock Man in Japan, was first released in 1987 for Nintendo by Capcom. The backstory for the game is that a man named Dr. Light and the android that he built to be his lab assistant, Rock, were betrayed by the evil Dr. Wily, who stole Dr. Light’s work and made evil robot with special weapons to take over the world.

Dr. Light reconfigured his lab assistant into a battle droid with armor and a cannon, which he then called Mega Man. Once victorious over the evil robots, Mega Man can mimic their weapons, which are useful in the games as certain enemies are vulnerable to other enemies weapons.

Now, many video game films have been hyped too much before their release only to fall short of even the lowest expectations due to budget shortfalls and creative conflicts (or mountains of cocaine, prostitutes, and the failing health of a leading actor in Street Fighter’s case), but since Mega Man has such a loyal following and the series is known for embracing its nostalgic 8-bit roots, worries that the brand doesn’t have enough appeal or a signature style should be unfounded. Maybe I’m just a cock-eyed optimist, but I feel like we’re looking at the next Resident Evil instead of the next Super Mario Bros.

It could be good if they didn't go all Super Mario Bros. with it and try to shoehorn Mega Man into Tokyo or some shit like Mario was in Brooklyn.

...I-I have mixed feelings about this...
The fact that Big Hero 6 had some similarities with Megaman Classic's plot isn't helping either

I'll add this to the list of video game movies that will never be made due to development problems

I hope they go the cgi route like Roboboy; I mean I'm looking forward to Sly Cooper and Ratchet and Clank as it is so the smart movie producers will go with cgi for this game movie rather than trying to shoehorn in a real world angle.

Let me guess: One of them being that too many people on tumblr are going to whine how the movie only features white main characters?
Granted, The original Megaman didn't really have a diverse main cast (Unless you count Dr.Cossack and Kalinka, who are Russian, then again, they're still white).

Caring about what Tumblr thinks is going the wrong way for mass appeal anyway.

As an aside, I'd be all for a Mega Man movie. My big stipulation for it is they don't pull a Smurfs movie schtick where they are literally dragged out of the video game. That idea is shit and it's been done already.

Though bonus points if they make Dr. Wily a ninja:

I'd also be cool with an X series movie though, since post-apocalyptic sci-fi is interesting.

Either way, it being vaporware or shit is the likely outcome. If it comes out though I'd still be retarded enough to watch it because I'm a dumb idiot who is suckered in with name brands.

Paranormal Activity 3 & 4 Directors Helm Live-Action Mega Man Film
megaman01.jpg

CAPCOM announced on Thursday that Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (Catfish, Paranormal Activity 3 and 4) are writing and directing the previously announced film project of its Mega Man game franchise, with Masi Oka (Heroes) producing the project. The film is tentatively titled MEGA MAN. While the previous announcement in 2015 only described the project as a film, the announcement on Thursday specifically described the project as live-action.

CAPCOM noted in the announcement that the film "aims to appeal to a diverse audience," and will be " an adaptation that maintains the world of the Mega Man games, while incorporating the grand production and entertainment value that Hollywood movies are known for."

As previously announced, 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment are developing the project. The 2015 announcement noted that David Ready and Michael Finfer (Planet of the Apes franchise) are overseeing the project, but the announcement on Thursday does not mention them.

Chernin Entertainment is an entertainment company owned by Peter Chernin's The Chernin Group, who previously owned a majority stake in the media distribution site Crunchyroll, before AT&T acquired the Otter Media joint venture that operates Crunchyroll's parent company Ellation in August.

The Mega Man franchise (known as Rock Man in Japan) began in 1987 with CAPCOM's release of the first Mega Man game on the Nintendo Famicom. The franchise has since spawned numerous games, with the latest in the main series, Mega Man 11, released in North America on Tuesday, October 2. It has also spawned multiple manga and anime series and OVAs, as well as an American animated TV series. ADV Films released the Megaman: Upon a Star OVA in 2005. Viz Media released Ryo Takamisaki's MegaMan NT Warrior(Rockman.EXE) manga from 2004 to 2008, and also licensed the first two seasons of the anime adaptation, which aired on the Kids WB programming block. Viz also licensed the Megaman Star Force anime.
