I used to love watching these losers from California do some video-game themed Jack-Ass skits and short sketches, but over the years, they've grown to become more and more liberal, and less and less willing to push the enveloppe, natural side effect of living in California for so long. Doesn't help that every one of their fans left over are pretty much 100% confirmed SJWs so the echo chamber runs deep.
One of the most egregious examples of this recently is Derrick being a retard that probably hates spergs and people with autism, and his whole fanbase to be honest, because he thinks that the only reason people have mental issues is because of guns or violence and nothing to do with society, because he's scared that people will call him out for being the elitist faggot that he is: https://youtu.be/cXDVmjwcj80?t=3436
Or not understanding that there are SJWs out there who want free speech banned and cancel culture being a real thing: https://youtu.be/VlsbVgqorrk?t=1208
Rocco's twitter also contains some traces of liberal retardation: https://twitter.com/rocco_botte
Makes sense since his fridge when he was losing weight (his downfall imo) would make Wil Wheaton jealous: https://youtu.be/06O4wo67dAM?t=439
But getting into the real beef that makes Mega64 lolcow worthy is the many other things that their fans never really call them out on. For example, they worked on a movie called Mega64 Version 4.1 for at least since June 2016 (month first teaser came out, but I have strong suspicions that they've been working on it for at least a year before that) and expected to be released in Summer of 2017. Realising this is an unacheivable goal, they decided to keep quiet during the rest of the year, occasionally bringing it up here and there, before everyone forgot about it. As of February 2020, the film has not been released in any form. The last teaser came out in late 2017. Basically the Half-Life 3 of Mega64.
That being said, the die-hard fans will still pour their life savings into their Patreon, on top of their merch, to be fair, as opposed to certain Patreon scams, they do deliver on their promises. If anyone remembers the Funny Factory fiasco where Derrick called everyone stupid for not understanding their new direction of making lazy content for views, it became FriendDimension, for at least $1 a month, you get 2 vids a month that are basically inferior versions of James and Mike Mondays.
But if you are willing to dump in $24 a month, you can get an "exclusive merch item" delivered to your face every couple of months. This is on top of if you want to buy their 64 hour special shirts, their regular shirts, their con-exclusive shirts, their YouTube videos that you can watch for free and 3 seasons of a shitty TV show that nobody cares about, except for the skits, on physical Blu-Ray discs. Hell, their podcast tends to play out more like an informercial of their merch than ever before.
But you know what, making money from stupid fans is fine, but the problem is that all this merch, movie, podcast, and Patreon is getting them away from what did actually make them popular, the short 3-5 minute videos that can be for the most part, filmed over a weekend, especially since this is now their full-time job.
Well, if you're looking forward to just the short vids, I'll be frank and say, it's not the dry spell of short videos that happened from 2014-2018. However, the short videos we get now, with the exception of the new Kingdom Hearts video (not the recent re-release of the old video mind you), miss the point of Mega64 entirely, a couple of guys goofing off. Because they have so much experience with making skits about video games, it gave them an ego, thinking that they're the next David Lynch by making video game skits about the human condition, since they got popular off an old Burger Time skit from 2004 where a Rocco and Derrick fight each other in public with costumes. So now, all the videos have this ultra-cinematic filmmaking and safe, polished writing, which just defeats the original purpose of Mega64.
So what, content creators get shittier over time, nothing new. But I do think that behind this facade of ego is hiding something more sinister, like they're trying to make sure to only prop up select things from their pasts, because they know somewhere along the line, they screwed up big time. This is evidenced by the fact that they copystrike any old podcast highlight that makes them look "problematic".
Here's one of the things that popped up over the years that might be real, not 100% sure, but worth checking into: https://m.imgur.com/r/mega64/y6H8AEt
Usually, I prefer not to not spread some vague rumor, but it seems to be backed up by the existence of this reupload, which the description says the clip was taken down from the original channel, for "unknown" reasons, but notice the subject matter, date uploaded, coupled with Rocco's nervous laugh at 2:55 after cheating is brought up: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=X_q2420Rc98
But do not fear if one needs to do in-depth research, because all the past podcasts are located here (minus 285, which I think I might have it backed up somewhere, don't count on it 100%, but if people are interested, I'll try to set up a download link): https://mega64archives.github.io/#/
By the way, the reason 285 is missing is because Rocco got scared into getting it removed by some SJW group on Tumblr at the time.
At the end of the day, it just saddens me that a group I used to look up to, is now petpetually stuck in this infinite loop of deterioration. Rocco now spends all his spare money on figurines, Derrick doesn't even want to be there anymore, he justs wants to be an indie filmmaker and only does Mega64, since his indie music video career hasn't taken off yet. Shawn is basically screwed if Mega64 dies, or he'll leach off his wife, or get another job. Garrett just left his last job in order to do Mega64 full-time, so the only normal one left is in danger of becoming another lolcow. People that used to be entertainers in their early 20s, are now legit man-children in their late 30s who will never grow in anything beyond their small view of the world, hence why the podcast is now a loop of the same 3 or 4 topics talked about over and over again. It's a tragic waste of potential and I'm afraid to say that Mega64 is probably heading the way of the lolcow.
