Anyone that knows of metal elitist should give some of us a tale about encounters with such people. It would be nice to see what sort of autism went down with musical elitist that are nothing more than pretentious individuals.

I have a friend who's a metal elitist. He's younger than I am but he thinks that just because he listens to iron maiden he's so much more hardcore than everyone else who likes modern metal. He always talks about how there's gonna be a "metal revolution" where people will "rise up and overthrow all the faggots so that good metal is the mainstream." Anyone who unironically thinks that there will be a revolution, as in actual-bricks-and-molotovs-in-use revolution, inspired by or for the benefit of MUSIC is so seriously deluded that I kinda feel sad for them.

In this day and age where you can pretty much build your own musical soundtrack for your life , completely divorced if need be, from the tastes of others, who the hell CARES? Listen to what you like, there, done, was that so hard?! Some people just can't sleep knowing that somewhere out there, someone else is liking the WRONG KIND of music!!!!!

I'm so glad someone finally made this thread.

While metal elitism knows no true boundaries, I think it's most prevalent in black metal. For those unfamiliar, the black metal scene originated in Norway and is probably best known for a wave of murders, church arson, and allegations of cannibalism in the early 1990s. The music itself can actually be pretty good, but some of the fans take it way too fucking seriously. Especially when a lot of the bands make music videos like this.

Now, don't get me wrong, I love that shit. It's goofy as hell and the riffs are great. But so many black metal fans don't want any fun at all in their evil dark brooding veneration of the darkest darkened darkness. Any band that deviates from the early 90s Norwegian blueprint is haraam. Any band that gets a positive writeup in Pitchfork might as well be Justin Bieber. And anyone who dares to mock the Kiss-reject fashions will suffer a slew of impassioned death threats from a thousand hellbound keyboard warriors.

I used to work in heavy metal journalism for a few years, so I knew more than my fair share of snobby metal elitists. I'll see if I can remember any choice stories.

I used to be one of these people myself, but that was because my brother was into bands like A7X, BFMV and Trivium, whereas I was more into stuff like Cannibal Corpse, Death, Agalloch and Opeth. I still hate some of the bands he likes, but more or less because of my overexposure to them.

Ok, slight power level time: I was a tiny bit of a metal elitist when I was younger, but it was largely because I hadn't yet twigged that the 'shit mainstream music' was exactly that: lowest-common-denominator chart stuff. Once I'd worked out that there was actually a shitload of surprisingly good non-metal music that didn't get any chart time, I consumed a bit of humble pie and carried on with my life, albeit with broader musical tastes.
I knew a couple of proper metal elitists at the time, and it the months following my realisation, I came to see just how far they had their heads jammed up their arses. Dodged a bit of a bullet there.

The closest I got to a metal elitist was this Rastafarian white kid at my high school. He believed that, because he listened to Meshuggah and all of Maynard James Keenan's projects, he was the foremost authority on metal and prog metal. Needless to say, you could've made up a name that sounded like it was a Scandy death metal band, and he would have pretended to know who they were.

Most ironic about this kid, he frequently took the piss out of hipsters for their musical elitism.
