Actually, no. I'd say most BM bands are self-aware. What you are talking about was the genre's juvenile age illness which, interestingly enough, coincided with the times when rappers were actually killing each other instead of just singing about it.

It was co-produced by one of the dudes from Ulver, who are a pretty big deal, and it's great music for your next longboating expedition to Iceland. Listen here.

But black metal fans are some of the most venomous unholier-than-thou douchebags on the face of the planet. So when they found out that the Myrkur lady used to be in an indie band, they did the rational thing and started sending her death threats en masse.

Yeah, black metal people will flip their shit if you admit to liking anything other than black metal. Especially power metal, and especially especially any kind of rock, pop, country, electronica, or... well, anything not black, death, or I guess sometimes thrash metal.

I vaguely recall reading that one of my favorite one-man black metal acts, Xasthur, (Xasthur being the name of the band, its sole member calling himself "Malefic") was originally conceived as a full band, and at one point Malefic kicked a member out of the band when he learned that the guy in question was involved in... I can't remember, being a DJ or composing electronica on the weekends. NO POSERS ALLOWED

EDIT: In fact a few years ago Malefic decided everyone involved in modern black metal was a poser and stopped making black metal, or something. I dunno, guy is nuts.


EDIT 2: This is made into an ouroboros of irony, because Malefic is American and many European black metal fans think any American black metal musicians are automatically posers. I don't even know about misogyny in black metal since I've not been active in any broader black metal community, but I'm quite certain it is ubiquitous and pernicious.

The main reason people ban a book or other work of art is because they can't come up with an intelligent rebuttal. And just "this sucks" isn't one. Elaborate and articulate that thought.

I'm not a fan of most Black Metal. The vocals are too guttural for me to appreciate, and while I can admire the skill and precision in playing a guitar that fast, it's too discordant for my tastes. Also, I kinda think most of the themes used in the works are overly-morbid and trying too hard to shock people. That being said though, music taste is subjective, and I'm not going to look down on people who like it. I say "most" because ya never know. One artist might come around that ya like. Pays to keep an open mind.

There's more than that. Varg later on said that he killed Euro because the latter was a "Sammi", which means, a Finno-Ugric person and not a proper Aryan, such as Varg himself. But that, of course, may be just him justifying his juvenile hormonal imbalance. Varg is one of the few BM musicians that actually take this shit seriously and come off as horrendous wankers worshiped by alt-right losers.
