Michael D. Thervil, aka Lucien R. Black™ (yes he thinks he trademarked his name) is a self proclaimed firearms instructor and former prison guard out of North Carolina.

He came to e-fame due to a series of cringeworthy videos where among other things he points real firearms at his students and defends it as a valid training method.

He's had his NRA certification revoked and was banned from the local range for accidently shooting through the ceiling.

i'm vagely aware of this guy - runs in some circles i've avoided. nearly everything in his training videos is dangerous or outright wrong. his "israeli draw" is a little misleading. carrying condition 3 (no round chambered) is an outdated technique from the 1900's when autoloaders were still relatively new. the floating firing pin and a hammer fired pistol made the issue of a negligent discharge a problem with persons used to revolvers or not having any concealed carry at all. it was the Shanghai Police that brought the technique to popularity and it became the dominant carry method for holstered pistols through the 20th century.

the invention of the Cooper technique for modern autoloaders (and the advent of concealable, reliable, affordable, and useful double action pistols) completely made the "Israeli" technique useless overnight.

with a Glock, a partially charged striker pistol, carrying it in such a method is wasteful and probably a bad idea should you need to "beat the bad guy" when drawing and presenting. these days it is a crutch technique taught to people who have no training or experience with a firearm.

his "reload challenge" appears to be some retarded form of centeraxis relock, a largely pointless CQB pistol technique useful for clearing interiors of homes or firing from vehicles but mostly garbage for general use. for such reloads, it is better to constantly have the pistol presented and ready to fire at a target, or move yourself to cover, and the reload itself has little to no wrist action - the magazine should be "guided" into the magazine well by the index finger of the offhand while the palm of the offhand supports the magazine upwards and into position, a natural body motion. if it isn't a tactical reload, the off hand can be used to charge the weapon (sling shot method).

this guy reminds me of some of the special people working bail enforcement in Chicago. why he isn't using a bluegun or redgun or something is beyond me.

Look everyone knows that use real guns not only for training but for real life shooting applications (duh right). But there is a reason as to why I do. There is no “Training Pistol” or “Blue Gun” that will ever be made that will allow for motor skill development. These “Toys” will never allow the Shooter and most certainly the Gun-Fighter the opportunity to “feel the character” of the firearm that they carry for SD (Self-Defense) Application or as a PPS (Personal Protection Solution).

yes, this is why live fire exercises exist. not using a bluegun or redgun in a classroom setting (as per the video linked earlier) is asking for problems:

such a situation could be easily illustrated to sufficient effect by simply using a bluegun. intentionally not reducing risk when risk is avoidable without significant impact to the task is asinine.

is it appropriate to train new drivers in a busy motorway or an empty parking lot? is it appropriate to train new welders on scrap metal or customer work pieces?
