Forgive the lateness of my reply and if I'm rehashing old comments, but I wanted to add my 0.02.

I have finally made it through all 173 pages of this after reading it on and off for the past few months and all I have to say is, yikes. I knew he was a colossal jerk, a shitty boss, a bully and a pop culture elitist/snob, but the news of him, the buzzfeed article and the various stories about him are mortifying.

I have seen the HHJJ docu twice and am on the fence about it. It was informative and interesting but also clearly biased and incomplete at times (I agree it would have worked better as a multipart docuseries). Also, for those (understandably) upset about the overuse of John versus the lack of everyone else, after seeing it the second time, I have to speculate if it was done intentionally by the subjects themselves instead of (just) poor and biased editing. I am specifically talking about the lack of input from Lynne Naylor and Billy West. Obviously, the show and John himself must bring up some awful memories for them, in spite of their major contributions (particularly her; learning of her being a victim of his violence is heartbreaking. I'm glad she found true love in Chris (RIP). This would also explain why the actual reason she left Spumco/R&S was left ambiguous), so I can understand why they weren't too interested with being interviewed at great length, if that was the case. Also, I would have much preferred to hear from the real Anthony instead of that unnecessary and quasi-creepy fanboy, especially given how poorly placed his interview in the docu was. For shame!

Plus, while some like to point out the treatment of John's late father towards him as the reason why he is what he is...yeah, no. Even if his Dad was the world's biggest jerk or the "Dad the veteran" stereotype, it doesn't excuse preying on underage girls or making everyone else around you, particularly those that either loved him or had the potential of trying to befriend him, suffer (save for sycophants, of course). Nothing in his past, real, imagined, embellished or speculated on, justifies manipulating one of his victims into having an abortion and then getting mad at her for dare being sad about it or sending another one disturbing garbage like that "package boy" picture (*shudder*). Plus, not to play misery poker here, but Billy's own father, from what I could gather, was way, WAY worse than John's to the point of trying to kill him multiple times in his childhood and he isn't an asshole who blames the world for his problems. So fuck that shit.

Also, I know it was a few pages back, but yeah, I wouldn't mind a side by side comparison shot of the "evolution" of John's face. "Never the same face twice", indeed. Lol

A lot of the interview material apparently ended up on the cutting room floor, so that's your answer. I kind of blame the filmmakers, myself. I wanted to hear from the real life Anthony (I'd hoped we could hear what he thought about the episode, or what his dad thought of his portrayal in the episode), but the filmmakers apparently decided we didn't need that.

Pointing out why he is what he is isn't really an excuse, but I think there's something deeper about this. John doesn't seem to actually resent his father for what he did.

We would be able to tell where exactly he had plastic surgery.

Well, he is hitting 60. So not shocked he is having the sus on his face to look youngish. His next career will be porn animation if he is not lazy on his own work.

My guess is that considering how *everything* that came after R&S was inspired by his cartoon (no exceptions!), I can only imagine the amount of pride that he's feeling in seeing what his work influenced and "masterpieces" like these.

Also, way, way too late with this, but I can't help but notice that in the first picture of him on the first page of this thread how absolutely...red his face is. Knowing what I now know about him, he probably was drunk af when he took it.

Again: he was, in all likelihood, drunk off his ass for a professional photoshoot meant to promote him and his art. Classy.

Yeah, but why is John K mentioned in this tweet posted by Christine Weston Chandler (Sonichu creator)?

He really liked to get drunk. And high, too. He probably wasn't sober much when he was acting like a Hollywood big shot.

It doesn't really look like John K.'s art style either.

I'm surprised that Chris Chan could spell John Kricfalusi's name correctly. He actually used the full name instead of his shorter easier signature name, John K. I doubt he could say Kricfalusi correctly however.

This would pretty much explains everything. Didn't John also rely solely on alcohol for medication for a good three decades or so? If he was actually sober, he might have actually maintained a career long that what it was.

Also to go slightly off topic, I remember a certain quote from that Happy Happy Joy Joy documentary that really stuck out to me. Tom Minton appeared briefly in the film. I remember him saying that he believed that "John K had that razor sharp vision." "He knew exactly what he wanted and he could really see what no one else can see."

I am not sure I agree with the first part of his quote, but he ain't wrong with the "what no one else can see," comment.

The way this usually ended up was an artist having to do the same thing dozens of times because they didn't know what the fuck John wanted.

Of course, a lot of people thought that way about John. Back during the Filmation days, a lot of people thought he was destined for great things. As it turned out... not so much.

He honestly doesn't look bad for someone with a decades long history of substance abuse. It's his character that's ugly.

A lot of this was pure sadism, where he would force someone to draw the same thing over and over again, yelling at them constantly, and then just use the first thing they drew anyway. He was more of a dick than a perfectionist.
