Much of the motivation behind it, at least when it was first in the works, was to address criticisms of the books being sexist or Edward being abusive. The idea was "oh this thing he did in the original seemed creepy, but here are his thoughts behind doing it."
That just reinforces the creepy abusive stalker angle. We get to see inside the head of a stalker. We are supposed to sympathize with Edward. But I think this is going to make him look even more freaky and horrible.
