Holy shit I thought this was going to be a cinematic adaptation of Midsomer Murders and nearly had a heart attack.
Honestly I have always quite liked the pagan cult concept in horror so will be mildly optimistic

Visually, it looks pleasing and it's always interesting to see Swedish culture portrayed in foreign films because it doesn't happen that often. It's also good to see that Julia Ragnarsson is getting some international recognition. However, at the same time, I have trouble stomaching horror films... maybe if it gets enough positive reactions

From what I've heard this film will be to breaking up with someone what Hereditary was to losing a family member.
I just got back from seeing it and plebbit is predictably circlejerking all over the place. I foresee months of "Unpopular opinion but I really liked/disliked Midsommar" infighting.
For what it's worth, I enjoyed it very much. 10/10 for interesting psychedelic effects, The Haxan Cloak on board, and not being afraid to hang dong.
Ari Aster said he's taking a step back from horror for a bit and I'm interested to see what visuals he'll bring to his next genre of choice.

Just came back from it. I, for one, fucking loved it. I guess I'm a sucker for good cinematography and slow-burn shit. I think I liked it a bit more than Hereditary, though I thought that parts of it do really drag and it's definitely way more graphic than Hereditary was. I still have to sleep on it a little to make a full assessment.
But yeah. Mainstream audiences will predictably probably hate this shit. Stay strong, A24. You keep doing you and never change.

The nearest showing was an hour away and I was hellbent on seeing it. So boyfriend and I saw it opening day and I assumed that he would find it boring.

Acting, cinematography, production design, direction, music (I've said for years that The Haxan Cloak is perfect for horror movies, and now everyone will see why) were all aces, though I wouldn't be surprised if most audiences hated this more than Hereditary. It's less indebted to traditional horror than that was while being slower and stranger at the same time. Still when you look at other films coming out these days, there are worse directors to ape than Greenaway and Parajanov, and the more art-horror movies we get the better.

I find these movies (Hereditary and this one) similar to The Witch in that, they're both grounded in reality. What if witches were real in a period piece setting? What if they were real in a modern setting? Midsommer takes away all magical elements and asks 'what if this cult was real'? It depicts this cult in all its beauty and brutality. I've never seen anything like it.
Not to take away from this movie, but we're clearly in a renaissance of horror. The Lodge also looks good, and even the new IT movie has a great trailer. If that scene is any indication, then this IT will actually be good. The guy that did The Witch also has a movie, The Lighthouse, coming up. And he's supposed to be doing a Nosferatu. Even Us was pretty good.

I'm glad that the Horror genre is truly making a comeback beyond shitty conjuring movies and jumpscares. I think A24 is definitely the one to thank for it as they try to put out stuff of quality. Horror has always been the underdog genre, the one least recognized for movie awards and always scorned as schlock by snobby critics. But if crazy motherfuckers with a vision like Aster are now arriving on the scene, there's tons of hope and things to look forward to. I can't wait to see it.

Saw it yesterday, really good, not scary but super interesting, only issue I had was it felt a little too long maybe 5 or 10 minutes shorter may have helped.
So far it's been a super weak year for movies, hoping this is a sign things will start to pick up.
