Regardless of their origins, if Yitzhak and Miriam lived in Brazil, they'd most likely be able to speak Portuguese.

There’s a significant number of Ashkenazi Jews left Europe in the 1920s and 1930s with the rise of communism and nazism and fled to South America, particularly Argentina and Brazil. If any grandparent of Jonathan’s is truly from Brazil, they were very likely recent immigrants from Europe and as such have no real native Brazilian roots. Either way, Yizhak and Miriam were both born in Israel so that’s a moot point.

Miriam’s father Bernnard and his family emigrated to Brazil from Germany in 1936. Bernnard was 13-14 at the time. The family eventually emigrated to Israel after WWII (probably around 1949-50) where Bernnard and Miriam’s mother met and married.

Jonathan never claimed his family was Portuguese; he said his grandfather was Brazilian. His grandfather did indeed live in Brazil, but his maternal family are all German.

I speculate that Miriam's point in bringing it up was that they were immigrants and also spoke Portuguese - this fits with having lived in Brazil and does not preclude their actual Ashkenazi origins, as well as bolsters the "We can't be racists, We're immigrants!" narrative.

I think we agree on the upshot of all this.

I just think you put too much emphasis on the one extra "Portuguese" in the tweet, and inferred that Miriam actually said "I'm Portuguese", and got kinda sidetracked on that.

We don't know exactly what was said, but if you take that first Portuguese out, it reads as I described. I don't think goinglikeelsie "subbed it in for Brazillian", but I could see how she might make a note like that if MY said something like "My husband and I were immigrants, and speak Portuguese."

I’m gonna split the money on the table and say it’s two things feeding into each other:

1.) Mommy Dearest was a controlling, racist bitch who was use to winning arguments against her husband, which created a sissified/whatever environment that lead to ...

2.) JY becoming a socially awkward deviant who followed his mom’s stronger personality and decided to emulate her. Meaning he’s as guilty of elder abuse as she is emotional manipulation...

And now there’s a cycle of MY/JY being alternating dominant/submissive pairing. Both abuse and are abused by the other. I have zero doubt it’s a love/hate dynamic and now there’s weirdo sexual tension between the two.

Kinda have my doubts that Miriam was a nurse. Her deleted LinkedIn page says she was a “nursing unit clerk” — clerk, not nurse. Also that she worked in “fund raising” for Peace Arch Hospital Foundation. The foundation is separate from the hospital.
