So in a nutshell, it's an above-average commercial made to sell toys. Sounds about right.fftopic: but here's a leak.
Looks like it was animated on ToonBoom, so all the talk about it being a callback to traditionally animated films is silly.
Anyways...
First of all, Hasbro plugs Hungry Hungry Hippos (which they own) within the first 30 minutes of it.
Other than that though, it's... alright? Can't review it from any sort of fan's standpoint but it's a pretty average kid's movie; the VA for the main characters is grating, the colours pop, it spoonfeeds everything to you and paces stuff awkwardly so seven year olds can get it, et cetera. I'll admit some of the background art and scene setups are visually gorgeous, but at the same time there are a bunch of pretty obvious mistakes (full plates turned empty during the pirate song was the most jarring to me, but the legs on the models are often weirdly rigged) that really makes me wonder how long they've been making this movie. Also, the meshing of CGI and 2D is The Road To El Dorado levels of horrific.
In all it's a bump above straight-to-DVD quality but it still feels like an overly-saccharine Disney ripoff, with even more awkwardly shoved-in songs and a fraction of the budget.
Oh and at some point the main characters turn into sea-horses for a single song before turning back. There's no reason for it to be there other than to market toys, and by the looks of it Hasbro has released multiple lines of seapony toys.
