To me this belt is more a token belt than anything. It was a vacant belt won by beating a guy who has one fight in the organisation against the then ranked 6th fighter in the division. He didn't beat Khabib to win the belt, he didn't fight either of the two guys above him who did fight Khabib. It feels a bit hollow. In my opinion until he beats either/or Dustin or Gaethje, that belt doesn't really mean all that much. Same thing if Chandler won it. He needs to start beating the other guys in the division for it to stick.

Not surprised that when Dustin was offered the chance to fight for the belt he passed and went for the money fight with Conor.

Overall, still a shit main card with the exceptions of the main event and the Barboza fight.

I actually enjoyed the main aside from Ferguson/Dariush and even that had that amazing post fight interview. I'm still rather new so a lot of the fighters are unknowns for me, but none of the fights felt like they actually dragged on with stretches of nothing.
Also Chandler looked really short, like I know that a lot of the people in the ring were just taller, but he looks so short and it was hilarious to me.

Barboza fight was great.
Chookagian fight was classic shit womens mma striking. Sparring/shadow boxing session by her as her moron opponent runs into her punches that she only gets because she towers over her opponents in that division and has a long reach.
The flyweight fight after that, idk why they put that in. One guy was backing up all the time and throwing weak attacks while the other guys actually tried doing stuff.
Ferguson fight was as you thought.
Main card was good.

IDK if you watched the last event (UFC 261) but that was exciting as hell. This main card was shit aside from the first and last fight, most of the prelims were better.

Chandler is short for the weight class, he's listed at 5'8, which likely means he's shorter. He is shorter than Rogan.

Chandler's reversal after getting his back taken by Oliveira was beautiful to watch.

What wasn't exactly beautiful was Chandler's striking. Oliveira was caught good, but I don't think there was ever a time where Oliveira was praised for his defense. Chandler swings too big and stands too wide, which prevents him from using better footwork (i.e. pivoting and stance switching) and kicks.

Poirier would be a bad matchup for Chandler because of his superior hands. Gaethje would be a worse one because of his leg kicks and his hands. Both have the reflexes to defend against Chandler's looping punches as well.

At the end of the day though, I don't know how exactly Chandler's fights with both of these gentlemen would play out. I admired how well he handled his loss with Oliveira, so I can only conclude that he has the motivation and maturity to make major adjustments to his standup within half a year at most.

Here's a video of Chandler breaking down his loss to Oliveira, by the way.

Speaking of adjustments, I do not think Ferguson is capable of making them at this stage of his career. He's pretty old now, which probably means that he is set in his ways. I think Ferguson will be kept in the roster for the next few years (as we all know, Ferguson is stubborn individual + he's a fan favorite), but he will stick to fighting lower ranked dudes or other fan favorites who aren't top contenders (e.g. Cerrone, the Diaz bros, etc.)

Cyborgs opponent last night lost to her in the most hilarious fashion imaginable. Ate 150+ strikes up until the last 10 seconds of the fight when Cris TKOed her.

She pretty much took the maximum amount of damage possible in the fight and then got knocked out as well at the very end of it.

This is why I think Oliveira is going to drop the belt soon. He got smacked around in the 1st round and Chandler, as you said, isn't the most technical striker. He is basically the typical "explosive wrestler with a right hand (Woodley, Mendes, that sort of fighter)" . I think if they put Poirier or Gaethje with Olives, he's going to have to get it to the ground to win.

Tony is now the lightweight Woodley. Someone with an obvious hole in his game and who they can use to springboard hot prospects to the top 5 or 6 based on Tony's name recognition and the hope that he will come out and do some crazy shit.

What's your take on tonight's match? Font has a 5 or 6 inch reach advantage, but it's Cody. He can either be a disaster or come out looking shit hot.

Before the card started, I predicted that Font would win by a unanimous decision. Based on what i've seen of him, he isn't the fastest guy, but he does display a good understanding of basic boxing; in particular he stays behind his jab and uses it to set up other strikes.

Font has a much long reach than Cody, which is bolstered by his use of the jab. I thought that Font would be able to keep Cody off of him, using his straight shots to his advantage so that Cody couldn't advance with his hooks. I haven't actually watched the fight yet, but it turns out this is what he did, and Font confirmed this in his post-fight interview.

Font has been rising up pretty quickly, which is evident considering he beat the likes of Simon, Moraes, and now, Garbrandt. He reminds me of Kattar; he isn't fast with his hands, but he makes up for it by trying his best to keep the fight at the end of his reach.

Pretty much what you said. Cody also tried wrestling for the 1st two rounds with mixed success. This was a fight where you really saw and felt the 6 inch reach advantage being used. Funnily enough Rob said he could kinda tell Cody wanted bang but didn't until the 5th, where he had a bit more success. Still hits hard as hell though.

Esparza v Yan was a pleasant surprise in how fucking retarded Yan was. Bull rushes a known wrestler, gets taken down, tries to armbar her own arm, comes out in the second throwing high kicks and taken down, gets crucified and finished. The Chinese are really not doing well this year.

Heavyweight fight on the main card was fun as was Hermansson v Edmen.

Hitting hard doesn't matter if you aren't landing. I watched the fight, and saw that Font did a really good job at keeping distance with his lead hand. Not only did he use it to jab, but he used it to frame on Cody's head so he could control his posture.

Keeping Cody at the end of his reach also helped Font see Cody's counterattacks. Every time Font jabbed, Cody would try timing it with an overhand, but Font would know it and either frame with the jabbing arm, block with his shoulder, pull away, or all three.

Font's bobbing and weaving was pretty good too, which was useful for dodging Cody's hooks.

Watching the fight, I could tell that Cody was wary of Font's straight punches. I don't think I've ever seen Cody go toe-to-toe with someone with the reach and tactics that Font has. I guess this explains why Cody was also trying to time Font's jabs with takedowns.

EDIT: Font also did a good job at catching Cody with his right hook as he was trying to circle away from his straight shots. Font seems to be among the most complete boxers in the UFC; he just needs to develop more speed.

So, generally shit weekend card with Ponzinibbio's fight being a banger. Walt Harris doing his usual thing of throwing leather for 3 mins then getting taken down and giving up. Rozenstruik and Sakai was mercifully short where it was basically Jair and Sakai feeling each other out for the 1st round before Jair decided to go for the KO with 1 second left in the round.

Great weekend of fights that actually started last night. Claressa Shields made her MMA debut and overcame grappling adversity and managed to finish her opponent with grounded strikes. Brittany Elkin might be the worst brown belt to have ever existed though, doing nothing with two mounts and completely whiffing an armbar. Loughanne/Diamond was a Sanchez/Guida throwback. Very entertaining and gutsy beatdown.

Bellator tonight with Douglas Lima defending against the undefeated Yaroslav Amosov. The always entertaining Paul Daley in the co-main event spot.

Adesanya/Vettori II, Figueireido/Moreno II, and Nate Diaz v Leon Edwards tomorrow night. Very top heavy card but good shit, nonetheless.

Also, RIZIN.28. First MMA event at the Tokyo Dome in 18 years. Very stacked, imo. Fantastic BW Grand Prix, their no.2 featherweight vs no.3 featherweight in the Main Event, Tenshin Nasukawa v 3 guys in a modified boxing fight (different opponent for each round), Lightweight title fight between Musayev and Roberto Satoshi, FW Champ Saito against Musayev's teammate, Vugar Keramov, and the top two domestic Japanese heavyweights facing each other.

Aaron Pico is putting on a total masterclass in grappling on his unfortunate opponent right now. Chain wrestling galore and his submission transitions have been slick as fuck.

Even after the early losses in his career, he still looks like a tremendous future talent.

Paul Craig has no chill. Once again another live UFC event since covid ends up with another broken limb. Cranked that nigga's arm in an armbar until it snapped and then kept smacking him in the face while his arm flops around like a noodle.
UFC 261 - Weidman's leg breaks.
UFC 262 - Jacare's arm breaks.
UFC 263 - Jamahal Hill's arm snaps.

Edit 1:
Belal vs Maia went as you expected, Maia shooting for the single leg and never getting it.

Edwards vs Diaz was 4 rounds of Edwards picking Nate apart, then Nate rocking Edwards in the 5th and Edwards surviving to get the UD win. Of course, knowing how shit Diaz fans are, they will claim that with 1 more round he would have won or that because Edwards ran/clinch, he lost because he's a bitch. Also, Diaz's excuse was that he "couldn't get going", in spite his prior claims always being that he gets going in rounds 4 and 5. (Seriously, fuck this crowd).
