Modding Heaven - Games that have a huge modding community or great Mod support

  • Intermittent Denial of Service attack is causing downtime. Looks like a kiddie 5 min rental. Waiting on a response from upstream.

Mods. We all know them, we all love them, we all use them. Some of us even make them.

This thread is dedicated to games that either have a very large modding community like Skyrim or Fallout 3 and up
or to games with great mod support that are so easy to mod that even a 70 y/o mentally insane tranny could do it like StarSector or SDT.

Feel free to submit your own mods or share modding guides for specific games. you can't have too many mods.

Minecraft and Terraria both have huge modding communities with devs that do arguably more work than the game devs themselves.

Factorio has lots of mods as well though the game is less popular so the modding community is smaller comparatively to something like Minecraft.

Funny example of Minecraft modding would be Sodium, which is literally a rewrite of the game’s shit rendering engine and produces incredible results.

GTA has a large modding community on the PC. Especially ones with mods that allow you to play as a police officer.

Given that mods are often treated as a way to fix bad games, Morrowind, ironically, has probably one of the best mod repositories of any game; but has absolutely next to no need for it since the base game is fantastic on it's own.

To give a specific example, I don't think anything comes anywhere close to Tamriel Rebuilt. Given that it's had over 15 years of development, it's got more content than any other mod or any official DLC for any game Bethesda's ever made or published.

Medieval Total War 2 deserves a mention. The mods have kept me playing consistently since it came out 14 years ago. Like Morrowind, the base game and expansions are good enough but the mods manage to turn it up to a whole new level.

Stainless Steel is the best if you're looking for something close to the original experience turned up to 11. Basically adds more factions, units, settlements, increases the size of the map, improves the AI etc.

There's also a bunch of total conversions for Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Warhammer (Although why bother now with Warhammer Total War out). Currently playing one of the better LOTR mods, Divide & Conquer. I highly recommend it!

Doom's got 25 years worth of mods and fanmade levels that completely overhaul the experience. It's probably the biggest and longest lasting modding community of any video game ever and it's still going strong.

Thief 2 has had a community making fan missions for the game for years. The levels people make are some top-notch stuff. Thief 2X is a great start for someone looking for a kinda-sequel to the original Thief games. There's also The Dark Mod, which is essentially a toolbox for people to make fan missions on id Tech 4.

There's also Rimworld, which has a bunch of mods that are as simple to install as breathing (thanks, Tynan). There are QOL mods that make managing colonies less tedious and micro-managey. There's customization mods that allow you to customize the map and pawns before heading in. There's gameplay and combat mods that can spice up your playthrough if you're feeling burnt out.

And of course, there's shit like this. (NSFW)

Of course there's a rape section of the mod, this is the Sims Modding Community all over again.

FNV has some amazing mods. There is one about being a bountyhunter which is damn good and some of the mods are needed to fix the game.

Factorio has lots of mods because you either don't really feel the game, or you sacrifice your soul to it in the name of efficiency. There's a reason so many late factorio games look like circuit boards.
