I was more making a comment about the ubisoft piracy stuff mentioned above.

That said I think there's a line somewhere that decides if you deserve pay for your work or not. If your game is shit but I wanna try it, you still don't deserve my money.

Because those games usually take between 6 months and a year to complete and release. People who WORK in those games need to get payed at least something in those months. That's where publishing houses come, they PAY THE DEV team to complete the games and then THE PUBLISHING HOUSE gets the rights from the sales of said games. Maybe they cut in some of the porcentage to Devs but very unlikely.

If nobody got paid a percentage of sales to publish on Steam then why would anyone bother using it instead of directly selling from their own website or going to another vendor? Why would developers surrender all their profits to a platform that doesn't pay them? For the privilege of being published? As much as I hate to agree with the retard I think piracy can help smaller games. Users who pirate it and like the game go on to engage in the community, talk about it online and maybe even create content for it and possibly even buy it.

Because the devs get pay either way for their work. The only ones who suffer from piracy are the distributors or publishing companies.

In the case of Steam, most Frontpage games are sourced by someone outside the dev team who pay them and they get the revenue from the sales along with Steam.

That's a pretty flawed argument.
1: It assumes that nobody would lose their job if a company underperforms due to pirating.
2: It completely breaks down in the case of small or indie game developers who are more directly affected by market forces.
3: If a game is unprofitable due to piracy, a company isn't incentivised to greenlight more of them.

I don't wanna get involved that pink sperg's spergery but small/independent developers do benefit from piracy most of the time. I'm a dev and used to bring this up on panels all the time, so there's an argument for it. It's pretty clear when you think about things in terms of sales conversion. And more importantly as a game developer you sound like a faggot when you bitch about "lost profits".
But it's only true up to a certain level of market penetration and I think Factorio is probably over that threshold by now, it's probably at least neutral for them. They've done the smart thing with a business model where it's kind of irrelevant: if you're the kind of autist who wants to push trains around for years they'll get you eventually.
