Theres a difference in how the characters come across, where you suck makes a lot more sense as they are competing and shes flirting, while "you a scrub" sounds alien. Additionally Nagatoro is not a gamer, she cheats to beat Senpai (a gamer). Its a bad translation and doesn't fit the character, the setting, or the theme.

The "sus" thing is so surprisingly irritating to me. I don't even care about fags defending it for woke brownie points or whatever. Seeing the word "sus" as the word choice that some out of touch translator chose is enough to make me pirate the anime even though Crunchy Roll probably offers it for free. I want to pirate it out of spite.

The phrase she uses is "はいザコ！先輩ザコ―！" wherein ザコ is outdated slang (even now and by Japanese standards) for "small fry" (lit. 雑魚, "miscellaneous/random fish") so "scrub" makes more sense than "you suck" if you're just going for word-for-word accuracy. The scanlation in this case is actually translated more poorly.

Honestly, in that case, it feels like the literal "small fry" would've been the most suitable translation. Something like "noob" or "scrub" definitely has additional connotations in English beyond their literal meaning of "inexperienced beginner", and I don't think I've ever heard them used unironically outside of the context of video games.

Small fry doesn't make sense in context since the implication of that would be that she's comparing him to bigger fish. ザコ doesn't really have that connotation associated with it, and plenty of people (including edgy teenage girls from the 00s) understand "scrub."
