Out of all the great, relatively obscure movies I've viewed recently, Valhalla Rising comes to mind. It's violent, bleak, gritty and Mads Mikkelsen is in it and he kills a ton of dudes.

Other than that, I would also recommend this horribly depressing but really well-made Belarusian WW2 movie called Come and See.

Fringe is an amazing show that not enough people have seen. I'm still pissed that John Noble didn't receive an Emmy for his performance.

Also, Misfits. It's free on Hulu. You have no excuse.

As stated above, Guardians of the Galaxy is incredible. I think the pacing may've been a little fast, but other than that it was perfect. Go watch it.

I just saw all of the Pusher movies and I really got into them. I can't say which is best; they're all equally good in my opinion. They're all very intense and dramatic and bleakly funny in their presentation.

Honestly, I would recommend almost anything by Nicolas Winding Refn. To date, the only movie of his I can't say I really liked was Only God Forgives.

I want to watch Battlestar Galactica. Should I start with the new one or the old one?

Holy shit, this is good. The main people are more about the mother and the teacher then Hikari himself, but you really get a good sense of those three through-out. It's a really uplifting show that shows that any child with a disability can change. I love how the show knows that yes there's hope to change, but there still going to be problems. However, taking a small step in a huge goal means a lot when you have support around you that understands you. I also love how it brings up the point of using autism as a excuse when accidents happen. I don't see a lot of media on autism that brings up that point. I recommend checking this out. I have no idea if anyone here will like it, but you might get something out of it.

I you haven't seen the 2012 remake of Maniac starring Elijah Wood I wholeheartedly recommend it. A very effective slasher/psychological thriller. I believe it is still on Netflix, if you have that.

The original series is very 70s. If that's not your thing then you'd be okay skipping it. The remake is something altogether different through reworking characters and concepts from the original. I think it does more interesting things with its ideas and its characters are more complex. Honestly you don't even need to know the original exists to enjoy or get the remake. I'd say to start with the remake.

Over the last week I have simultaneously been introduced to the show True Detective, and also decided it is the single best TV show I have ever seen.

Ever.

The SpoilerFree reasons for this are as follows

1) The Story: The series has possibly one of the single darkest and bleakest story-lines I have seen in recent memory, and critically manages to pull it off maturely and with perfect nuance, never delving into gratuitous overuse or exploitative framing of the pitch black themes it explores. From start to finish it is a perfectly disturbing, unnerving and horrifying experience, and it refuses in the end to offer any easy happy ending or an easier "pointless grimdark" ending.

2) The Characters: woody harrelson and matthew mcconaughey are simply fucking perfect. Both portray extremely well layered and well developed characters whose evolution throughout the series is understated but absolutely perfectly done. Adding to them are some extremely well nuanced and 3 dimensional supporting characters, all of whom do their jobs well and ensure not a single moment of dialogue or a single scene is wasted.

3) The Setting: The series is visually more impressive than any other tv show i can remember, and makes absolutely fantastic use of the Louisiana swamps, forests, and urban settings, and is beautifully filmed at every fucking moment. Honestly its use of the swamps and wetlands outdoes things like Lord of the Ring's cinematography. Adding to that is an extremely good and non intrusive soundtrack. both of which make the atmosphere absolutely chilling at any given time, drifting from surreal horror to claustrophobic tension with ease.

And now for the spoiler (only slightly tho) reasons why I like it

1) HOLY FUCKING SHIT I FINALLY HAVE A MUTHERFUCKING LOVECRAFTIAN TV SHOW!!!! THE ENTIRE THING IS LITERALLY AN ADAPTATION OF THE KING IN YELLOW!!!!!!!

2) The story is also HEAVILY derivative of certain Jack Chick tracts (or some extremely similar items) and subverts them beautifully

3) It has tits

and now for the ULTIMATE spoiler which gives away the identity of the main antagonist. DO NOT LOOK unless you have seen the series or are just real fuckin eager to know what I consider to be the ultimate

THE MAIN VILLAIN IS CHRIS!!!!!

HE IS LITERALLY FUCKING CHRIS!!!

Seriously, the series is like someone put everything i love in a blender and shat out the best fucking show i ever seen

Sorry to gush but I seriously reccomend this show to everyone. Be warned though it is not happy watching and is as disturbing as it could well be. but dont let that put you off

The Hero Yoshihiko and the Demon King's Castle. It's a parody of various RPGs, mostly the Dragon Quest ones. It was actually sanctioned by Square Enix. Worth a watch if you grew up playing those sorts of games and have fond memories. Think Holy Grail if it was made by people who grew up on the SNES.

Velvet Goldmine. If you like glam rock, you'll like it. Even if you don't like it, you'll love it. Citizen Kane meets Glam rock. Visually stunning, the music is amazing (Jonathan Rhys Meyers who plays this David Bowie-esque singer and Ewan McGregor who plays this Iggy Pop-esque singer provided their own vocals), the story is great, it's surreal, and in the original Citizen Kane the reporter was kind of just there, but in Velvet Goldmine the reporter, who is played by Christian Bale (and he's really adorable in this role, I know, Christian Bale adorable, but he's this amazingly sympathetic character) has a personal connection to the story he's supposed to be researching and reporting. It's about friendship, love, sexuality, and most importantly, identity. I have the soundtrack and it's amazing. Watch it! I hate being the only person I know who has seen it. It's on Netflix, so yeah, watch it. Also, Ewan McGregor speaks in an American accent, wears black nail polish, and strips.
