Movies that need more love - To all the great film that has become forgotten

Are there any movies that you think should get more attention than they actually do? This is just on movies that are considered bad and you like but also movies that are just forgotten but you think need their spotlight. A movie no one really talks about but you think you hold to your heart.

Octobersky (1999) -This is about the real story of Homer Hickam and the Rocketboys as they were called. Homer lived in the small town of Coalwood, West Virginia where most of the men worked in a mineshaft, including his father. His dad expected Homer to work there as well. After Sputnik is launched Homer gets interested by it and wants to go into that work. He and some friends start building rockets much to the dismay of Homers father and some others in town. This is a fantastic movie. Everyone plays their parts well and it makes you root for Homer. They did sort of make his father more villain like in this, but that was needed for the drama. There were also six robot boys rather than four, they probably thought six was too much so they combined some of them. I think this movie is getting some more attention but it's not a household name.

Yesterday (2019) - Jack is a failing musician trying to make it big. His friend Eve is his biggest supporter and best friend since they were children. After a worldwide blackout Jack wakes up to find the world no longer remembers the Beatles. All their songs, history, and everything about them is gone. Other things like Coca Cola and cigarettes' are also gone. Jack cashes in on this and becomes a huge hit, though his fame hurts his relationship with Eve and he starts to feel guilty about taking art that isn't his. It's a cute love story and a neat way to show what the world would be like. The biggest problem is that is doesn't explore it enough. We never see most of the Beatles, we never know how many other bands or movements went in history, we don't know how many people actually remember the Beatles as Jack isn't the only one. It's also ben done before, but it's still a fun movie with a lot of good Beatles songs.

Disturbia (2007) Kale is a teen who lost his father in a horrible accident. After punching his teacher he is put under house arrest for a few months. He soon starts to grow board and takes up spying on his neighbors. At first it's all fun and games but he soon starts to see his neighbor Robert is father creepy. When he sees Roberts car matches that of a supposed killer he starts to suspect his neighbor might be a serial killer. Say what you want about Shia but I like this movie. It's not scary but it has creepy moments. It's something that makes you think if your neighbors are as innocent as they look.

I made a video a few years back on this, actually.

Americans need to watch more Bud Spencer (RIP) & Terence Hill movies. Definitely not underrated in Europe, but I've yet to meet an American who knows them. The best of the best in terms of silly spaghetti western and nonsensical adventures.

Yeah, October Sky was a good movie. I recommend watching it for a decent coming-of-age story.
In that vein, I’d also say that Fat Kid Rules The World is a surprisingly good movie that has the theme of everybody having different life problems and was just well done in general.
Worlds Fastest Indian is absolutely based. It’s about this old dude who loves to break landspeed records on his motorbike and is just a great story.
And speaking of things going fast, Rush is a fantastic movie about Nikki Lauda and his story. It goes over his rivalries, his accidents, his races and is just a great biopic about this absolute lad.

They’re fucking great. I still rank They Call Me Trinity as one of my favorite spaghetti westerns overall, it’s just a classic.

Yeah, maybe don't do that...

Otherwise, I recommend It's Such a Beautiful Day. Was made by this one dude, Don Herzfedlt, who has a few viral animated videos out there on YouTube. The film itself got fairly popular years ago when Netflix hosted it. Lot of people I can see calling it boring and incredibly pretentious, though I still think it has some decent humor and a lot of emotion to it. I believe the whole thing's available for free on YouTube and Vimeo. Included a trailer to it below, as well as one of his other animations:

- Kumiko, Treasure Hunter: A japanese office woman fed up with her life obsseses over the mvoie Fargo and travels to Minnesota to find the money.
- Tangerine: The story of two black trans hookers in LA, one of whom is now free and in search of her boyfriend with a mysterious armenian taxi driver infatuaded with her. Extra points, because the main characters are actual characters.
- Trollhunter: A mockumentary about a group of norwegian students that follow a real life troll hunter while he works, has scenes of real life interviews that semi justify the trolls.
-Anina: A very uruguayan film about a little girl that gets in rather surreal trouble for petty things.
- La Negrada: First mexican film with an black cast and following a community about their lives. Imagine City of God but without crime.

Kinda cheating round: Persepolis, The Triplets of Belleville, Waltz with Bashir and Breadwinner, these are not strange choices if you are into animation but they don't mentioned enough allthough you can say this of any animated feature made outside the US. I know must of this cuz they are either on streaming services or my local tv channels got them somehow.

Now with more ironic territory, Bollywood movies:
- Bol Bachchan, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Singham: All of this have the same reason, Ajay Devgn. You might have seen this guy without knowing it he is a very beefy indian guy with moustache and sunglasses. He usually is cast as a tough guy and all this movies are comedies which I enjoy a lot because nostalgia.
- Bunty Aur Babli: Yes, an indian movie named Bunty. It's about a guy with a very short temper that goes one summer to Goa (indian SoCal) to earn money for his family, finds love and a rival that almost detsroys his life. It's full of music songs and a very mid 2000s vibe that got me thinking it was bizarro HSM.
- Outsourced: Most of my liking for this movie comes from the NBC show from ten years ago so if you watch that one is pretty much the same plot. An american telemarketer has to go to India to train his replacements. Pretty standard but it has its charm. Its funny to me that two guys from the show are in Mr. Robot tho.

Terrible movies to watch with friends, or alone I don't know you:
- Bolivar El Heroe: This movie is legendary in Latin America, it's magnificent. Full on shitpost material. It's a very fictionalized retelling of the story of Simon Bolivar, an independentist icon for most nations in South America with a very western anime style to it. This movie was hidden to the public for years after its premiere and was even said to be a myth to attack the image of Colombia (the nation responsible for this atrocity). Its available in YouTube and I have been planning to dub it to english for a while.
- Motu Patlu: King of Kings: Remember the meme?, this movie is legit one of the few that bored me so much I almost fell asleep. Follows titular Motu and Patlu helping a circus liuon become the king of the jungle. I saw this on Netflix thrice.
- All Neil Breen

The ones that got exported to the US were pretty popular among boomers during the 70s drive-in era.

Du rififi chez les hommes, a B&W French movie from 1955. Grandfather of heist movies.
Movies based on Bohumil Hrabal's novels, directed by Jirí Menzel - Closely Watched/Observed Trains, Cutting it Short, etc. Rest of the Czech New Wave, too.

I could list a damn lot, mostly because general audiences don't seem to give much of a fuck about anything outside of yearly capeshit blockbusters.

And I don't move in movie buff circles.

Everything Must Go - Will Ferrell in a dramatic role as an alcoholic who hits rock bottom and has his AA sponsor steal his wife, leaving him homeless and destitute. He moves all his possessions onto the lawn and holds a yard sale while he begins putting himself back together.

It is way better than anyone could expect, and largely unheard-of.

Kong: Skull Island.

It's probably my favorite movie of the 2010s, it's a better "jungle adventure" movie than either of the Jurassic World movies and it's the best of these "MonsterVerse" movies so far.

The only issue is Brie Larson but she still isn't enough to ruin it, it just didn't get the respect it deserves, which is understandable given people's franchise fatigue in this age of everything being rebooted, but it's exactly how movies like this should be made, the idea of Vietnam era soldiers versus King Kong is such an entirely creative and unqiue spin on the franchise, far more creative than what Hollywood usually puts out these days, it's fucking great.

The other day I saw a really fucking good Michael Crichton movie called Coma and it was pretty damn disturbing--in a good way. Hospitals freak me out and this movie definitely didn't help. I'm surprised no one ever talks about it because it's very well-shot and very freaky.

That was a good movie, especially since it showed just how much power Doctors have and how, if one wants to kill you for profit, there's little you could do about it.

I have a thing for 70s horror, like Demon Seed, Coma, Embryo and The Stepford Wives. 70's horror movies just have this sort of intimate creepiness to them. I would highly recommend a movie called Phase IV - a story about a pair of scientists, one old, one young, who sequester themselves in a dome in the middle of the desert to observe a colony of ants that has started to display odd behavior. This behavior includes eating houses, attacking people and animals, making crop circles, and creating odd geometric shapes out of dirt. The scientists engage in a game of strategy with the ants, trying to suss out what they want (as the older scientist has a theory that the ants are highly intelligent.) He attacks the ant mounds and sprays poison on them, and in return, they construct dirt mounds with reflective surfaces that start cooking the metal dome the scientists are living in. They also get in and sabotage the radio, leaving the scientists cut off. The premise might seem a little silly at first, but it's presented really well. The ants really do seem like a threat not just to the scientists, but to the Earth itself, because of their planning ability and sheer numbers. The whole movie is a slow burn mystery of trying to figure out what the ants want, and the ending is extremely creepy (although it wasn't true to the director Saul Bass' vision, as much of it was cut out, leaving it kind of ambiguous.) It's worth a watch though.

A 1993 movie from Alex Winter (Bill from Bill and Ted movies) and Tom Stern.
A change in Ceos at Fox, ended with this movie being buried

This movies gets a lot of love in the UK however I have never heard anyone outside the UK ever talk about it or knows of it
Plot "In 1969, two substance-abusing, unemployed actors retreat to the countryside for a holiday that proves disastrous."

Watership Down
Another britbong classic, yet really gets no play in America for reasons I don't understand outside maybe violence levels.
Did get a Netflix cgi remake a few years ago, that missed the point and was overall bad.

It’s a bit of a cult classic but Toxic Avenger hits every campy, sleazy, and graphically violent shitty 80s B-movie trope, and its fucking great. The world needs more ‘it’s dumb and we know it’ films. Seconding the Withnail and I recommendation, its popular with students cause theres a game to try drink along with the characters, it’s pretty hard to keep up

The Sentinel - 70s religious horror movie about a woman moving in to an apartment populated by eccentrics who may or may not be demons/lost souls and the apartment itself may or may not be a gateway to Hell. Burgess Merideth is great as the devil like figure, early roles for Christopher Walken and Jeff Goldblum, the vibe is like if you blended The Omen and Twin Peaks together. It's a good one that seems forgotten.

The Paperboy - 1994 Canadian horror flick about a psychotic paperboy stalking a single mom and her kid wanting them to be his "perfect family" it's pretty corny, but I like it for it's corniness. The paperboy sounds like the Squeaky Voiced Teen from The Simpsons when he's throwing a tantrum or trying to be menacing. USA Up All Night used to play this all the time in the late 90s. It's a good movie to watch and riff on with friends.

The Surgeon/Exquisite Tenderness - Someone mentioned Coma which reminded me of this. Forgotten Malcolm McDowell thriller about a deranged surgeon trying to find subjects to experiment on after being traumatized as a kid witnessing his brother's death. It's B movie schlock, but it's one of those B movies that feels almost like a fever dream. Interesting enough to watch once. Joe Bob Briggs riffed on it and that can be found on YouTube.

The Kiss - 80s horror flick about a cursed aunt visiting her family trying to pass the curse along to her niece. Not all that good, but had some decent effects, and I've remembered it enough to mention it so it must have left some kind of impression.
