In an effort to monetize 35 years of content, MTV is launching MTV Studios, with the goal of rebooting old hits — including Daria and The Real World —to sell to other networks and streamers.

MTV Studios is launching with an initial slate that includes reboots of Daria and unscripted entry Made joining previously announced Aeon Flux and The Real World as well as two original docuseries.

All four projects are being produced via MTV Studios and will be shopped to outside linear networks and SVOD platforms. In success, MTV Studios will produce a slate for outlets beyond Viacom with a focus on beloved series, franchises and spinoffs.

On the programming front, the new Daria is called Daria & Jodie and hails from writer Grace Edwards (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Inside Amy Shumer). The animated series is told through the eyes of Daria Morgendorrfer and one of her closest friends Jodie Landon and follows both as they take on the world, with their signature satirical voice while deconstructing popular culture, social classes, gender and race. The original Daria, a spinoff from Mike Judge's Beavis and Butt-Head, ran for five seasons on MTV from 1997-2002. Made, meanwhile, is a teen makeover show that ran from 2003-2014.Original docuseries The Valley follows a group of 20-somethings living in Nogales, Arizona, and tells the real-life story of friends on the edge of two countries and two cities as they share one valley, their youth and a common bond. Straight Up Ghosted explores stories of real people who vanished by blocking them and the uncomfortable truth about why they were ghosted.

Daria is one of those premises that I'm not sure can work on modern audiences.

It really only worked because a strong undercurrent of personal cynicism that Daria lived off of was THE dominant theme of the 90s. At the time, a young person could be bummed they'd have to take a salaried desk job and work for "the Man" for 30 years after high school was over, consume pop media, abandon their "true selves" and be considered a hero if they reacted to that by "dropping out" into the counterculture of "yeah whatever" indifference and caustic rejection of consumerism (which they ironically supported by buying products cooked up to feed them, like, TV shows where the hero wears old army jackets and calls everyone else around them a fool, perhaps? )

That mindset just doesn't compute in the age of international terrorism, undischarged student debt and globalism making that kind of assured but boring middle-class life seem like an impossible dream, not an unfortunate reality.

A reboot would address this if it were smart, but still, Daria frankly discusses things like racism, classism, personal dysfunction and, worst of all for the SJWs, depicts people with horrible vices as people, not monsters.

It's pretty clear that Mr DeMartino is not someone you should emulate, but at the end of the day, you feel bad for him because he's got a shitty job teaching kids too dumb to comprehend the material, too distracted by personal drama to even try, and the few smart ones who want to learn something and respect a teacher already know the dumbed-down curriculum and arguably are having their time wasted even being there.

So I have zero faith it can reinvent itself without falling into the SJW pits of sacrificing story for virtue signaling and including diversity, I could be surprised, but I doubt it, reboots generally please nobody, the new fans think the old show was obsolete (and are probably right) and the old ones think it can't measure up because it's not the same (and can't be)

Aeon Flux is going to suck.

There are no new ideas this decade.
Here's a thought, lets reboot eugenics too. I mean more overt eugenics, not the polite one practiced by and peddled by Lena Dunham.

You know how there are some things like slap bracelets or the Rwandan Genocide that should just stay in the 90s?

This is one of them.
Daria was a great show and a cult classic. It will probably be on Netflix or Amazon video as animated sitcoms are easy to sell to the 18 to 40 demographic.
