Amtrak is only shitty in that it's slow & expensive, compared to air travel, especially if you don't bring your own provisions. But as far as comfort & laid-back travel, you can't get any better.
It's the stations and neighborhood terminals which tend to be absolute shit, not the service.
Planned right, taking Amtrak cross country is comparable to renting a vehicle in overall cost; with the potential of being much cheaper, along with not having to drive.
