Amtrak is only shitty in that it's slow & expensive, compared to air travel, especially if you don't bring your own provisions. But as far as comfort & laid-back travel, you can't get any better.
It's the stations and neighborhood terminals which tend to be absolute shit, not the service.
Planned right, taking Amtrak cross country is comparable to renting a vehicle in overall cost; with the potential of being much cheaper, along with not having to drive.

This happened yesterday and you already have the guy's photo all over the news, in less than 24 hours. For comparison, Sasha Johnson was shot during the night from Saturday to Sunday (22nd/23rd) and they still have not id'ed the suspects, only given their age [published on 27th].
